Take a stroll along the Rock Park Esplanade from the New Ferry end towards the Refreshment Rooms (aka the Admiral) where you may find a drink and a pleasant meal.

Your enjoyment of this, however, may be frequently spoiled by having to climb over a mountainous pile of used sanitary towels and other unspeakable sewage waste just before the pub, the result of United Utilities cheery dumping of raw sewage into the Mersey every time it rains. (Residents of the area may have noticed it doing so quite often, by the way)

Now I can understand that heavy rain means a lot of water and there are basically two ways of solving this

1. United Utilities could dig into its enormous profits (£300 million last year) and build large underground holding tanks to hold this water and sewage for subsequent processing or:

2. Dump it into the Mersey.

Now building holding tanks big enough to do this will be very expensive and it will probably not be possible to handle the sort of downpour you expect say once in ten years, so dumping is going to happen.

The point is to make it a lot less frequent and to reduce the volume.

But if - as UU appears to have done - simply ignore the problem and dump it into the Mersey, the very least they could do is to send a squad round to clear up the result of their policy.

This will be expensive too, of course, and the more expensive the better say I. At some point it will become cheaper to build the holding reservoirs than clean up the resulting mess and the problem will be solved.

The current 'dump and forget it' policy is unacceptable.

Appalling frown I'm constantly shocked at how no-one seems to care about litter in any form. But yes, if the problem you mention is ultimately caused by United Utilities then they should be responsible for the clean up. Have you contacted them and told them?

I think you misunderstand about privatised utilities. They have no social responsibility, only one to maximise their shareholder returns.

Apparently the majority of the country think this is acceptable.

Some of us campaigned against the privatisation of essential services.

It needs to be reported to the Environment Agency.

The link below ,states the amount of £1 Billion was spent on cleaning the Mersey up over a period of 25yrs. Not sure how long ago, but it should still be respected and needs to be reported.
How awful ,it has to be a health hazard.

6pm each night to the right of Seacombe Ferry terminal U.U release their 'waste'into the Mersey.

Lovely, fragrant smell during the summer months and handily timed for BBQ'd al fresco meals.

They have to dump the water content of treated sewage, and there seems to be no way round this. But it should be clear water, not raw sewage.

At the very least the solid material should be screened out.

They have been given various fines about this issue relating this side of the Mersey and North West. The list is endless. Someone who has the knowledge, needs to report them.

Aha so that's were the Mersey burgers come from.

on a serious note, i find it unbelievable that this is allowed to happen, its environmentally unsafe for aquatic life and humans, then there's the deal of peoples pet dogs being poisoned etc.

Lets hope they clean up their act and get this sorted out, not very nice for the local residents, i wouldn't like to imagine the stench from this.

I know this is an old thread but it needs reporting to Defra as it is in breach of the draft water bill 2012 and the water framework directive 2000.
