I can get on internet but cannot access my emails at home but can at friends house with same laptop. Spent two hours on phone to Virgin they have checked all connections and settings remotely but no result. They want me to pay either a one of payment of £60 or take out a 12 month contract at £10 a month for support.Told them I would rather change provider.
I can access them through 3g on phone.
Anybody any ideas please
Any advice appreciated.

(I'm assuming Virgin are your ISP and that your email isn't through Virgin)

As you say you CAN use the emails at a friends house on your laptop so the problem has to be local to your connection at home.

Its got to be a wifi set up issue or firewall.
When your at your friends you would have set up your wifi connection with the correct prompts "Trusted" Etc.
At home you may have selected "Public Network".

Delete your wifi connection.
Network Sharing Center.
Manage wifi Connections (Top Left)
Remove your connection.

Re connect. And select Home network.
Make sure you have the correct password for the router.

Who is your e-mail provider ?

They couldn't have removed the connection if connected remotely.

Rossie says using the same laptop she can access her email on a friends wifi connection. I doubt is a password issue.

I wouldn't have thought so if she can access it from her friends.

Dns looks locally first before ISP.
The laptop has a local "hosts" file.

To refresh DNS

ipconfig /flushdns

Rossie,
A ping test can help with the issue.

From the start bar search type in

cmd

Click on the program cmd to start the program.

Type in lower case ping youremailprovider.com (hit enter)

Example
ping sky.com

This test can be run at your home and friends. Which will report back if there is a connection and the IP address of that connection.

So write down the ip address for your house and the results from your friends.
It will help. Yours may even report back 100% fail. Or Host Unreachable.
