There seems to be plenty of recruitment for a career as a ' Bailiff' at the moment. From £13,000 salary ,if you have the correct approach toward people, who will be struggling as much as you obviously will be!

https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/advice/planning/jobprofiles/Pages/bailiff.aspx

Does anybody know , how much are they able to charge for a visit and where does that fee go to? It seems that if someone can't pay, they will clobber them even more with extortionate fees. (A bit like Pay Day Loans)

I have only had one encounter with a bailiff, for a parking fee of one of my family, years ago and he had not long passed his test. He parked in a car park overnight because he'd had a couple of drinks.Seems fair enough to me! He wasn't up early enough the next morning to get back in time. Issued with a parking fine, which was paid. The same fine was issued twice by some nanahead. So the bailiffs eventually appeared. There's no stopping them once they have you in their grasp. Managed to get a letter of apology from the dept. originally responsible for the error, which was shoved in the bailiff's face when he next arrived.

A few cases that I have heard of, these visits are due to an error originally made by the authorities. Why don't they get the fine for incompetence?

I see them as people without empathy or even the ability to see anyone else as a person and imagine the job description would require someone who has maybe suffered humiliation, torment, bullying and would wish to take revenge.

You wouldn't do the job for £13,000 .........would you?????

Anyone had any experiences?

At the end of the day if a bill has not been paid then it has to be collected and if the payee has not replied to communications or spoken to anybody about financial hardship or queries then there is little option left.
People are given enough chances to pay before fees are added so surely if there is a query then this is to time to do it?
If somebody owed my company money and hadn't responded to correspondence then I would be employing a company to recover the debt.
Humiliation, torment, bullying, revenge - bit far fetched I think!

I used to live next door to a bailiff and he was a big blusterer. He used to come home from shops which he had closed down and often had some of the proceeds with him which he openly offered to me and our neighbours. He was most upset with me when I told him I wanted no part in another's misfortune(however it was caused). Other neighbours were delighted to get cheap trainers and booze.I am pretty sure he did not pay that money into the correct pot but kept it himself.

Incorrect!

My uncle was a bailiff and has told me exactly what goes on and how they get cash out of folk.

Put it this way, people are gullible and will believe anything, only bailiffs to the courts can enter your property and take goods.

"Look, all the nieghbours are watching, quick let me in" Theres humiliation.

Torment is constant phone calls day and night.

Bullying is exactly right, especially to the less vulnerable of society ie: women with children.

Revenge is correct, fools that got victimized in school by their teachers or bullied, like to see other folk struggle and hurt whilst getting enjoyment from it.

Fortunatly my uncle was a good one, he helped people by arranging payment plans from real income assessments.

Bailiffs are ..., they take the food from childrens mouths and the furniture from pensioners. They don't care who they hurt or what consequences their actions cause, all they care about is their commission added to their pay packet at the end of the month.

If your a bailiff your a ... bag and you know it, end of! (this is not aimed at julie)

Now get a real job instead of STEALING from others.

LEGALIZED STEALING is what it is granny.

Thats only your uncle though. I happen to know others and they are not like that at all. It is like any industry - there are good and bad and you have obviously had dealings with the bad. Take council tax for example - if people aren't made to pay - then do you want to pay their share? I think not!!
Think outside the box and consider people who are put in financial difficulty through people who don't pay their debts!

I would also like to say that there are correct procedures that should be followed and a good bailiff will do his job with the utmost respect to people and their property.

There are procedures to be followed before your goods can be taken and this only happens as a last resort. In my opinion there is a huge difference between "can't pay" and "won't pay". I have no idea if your benefits get cut.

I also think that some people could be very offended by some of the comments on this thread and before anybody comments I am not a bailiff!! I just think that every person and every case should be judged on their own merits and not be tarred by the same brush!

Bad bailiffs should be reported and can be reported to certain bodies just as bankers, insurance etc can be.

iirc a bailiff can only gain entry to your home under a police warrant signed by a magistrate, and these are only issued in the case of unpaid court fines or taxes. Civil debts are different, they can only enter your home if you leave a door or window unlocked, and if you bar their way they cant push you out of the way to gain entry. They can take anything outside your home, e.g. a car or caravan etc. Also according to some obscure law once a bailiff has been invited into your home, they can gain entry at any time and by whatever means. So don't let them in in the first place. They can add as many fees as they like to your bill, but in the end will have to refer the debt back to the people you owe the money to, telling them they were unable to collect it.

Only ever deal with the company or individual you owe money to, not a bailiff. If more people were aware of their rights, these bullies wouldn't be able to scare so many people.

Always make sure they are Bailiffs. You'll sometimes get "Doorstep Callers" from credit card companies who have no rights whatsoever. Bailiffs only have rights with a Court Order. Always ask to see the Court Order and to see I.D. If they have neither call the police.

Personally I would rather do that job than sit on my arse, have a number of kids and claiming benefits and being a burden on society - so would that make me ...?
I have always tried to help people on Wikiwirral but if this is the attitude of people on here then I'm wasting my time.

Also, by doing that kind of job Knowingly stealing and putting people in more debt let alone taking family's and their childrens food you would find it acceptable?

They laid the law down on the clampers, they should do the same for the bailiffs.
