Hello, I'm new here. Does anybody know anything about bookbinders and where a bookbinder living in Birkenhead around 1911 would have worked.

Sorry, can't help. Your best bet would be Kelly's Directory for that year. If you ever come up, Wirral Archives (0151 666 3903)may have it on microfiche.

As Chris says, Kelly's Directory (a huge tome!) for 1910/11 is your best bet. I think all the information was obtained from the census.

Good luck !

Many thanks for these suggestions(even Steve!). Spent a few days in the Wirral recently, staying at Meols. Good public transport services. the staff at Wirral Archives were wonderful, couldn't have been more enthusiastic about my enquiries regarding Claughton Higher School in Borough Road (Destroyed in WW2, no Steve, not Borough Road, the school!!). Enjoyed Birkenhead Park and Wirral Country Park.

Hi, Jemima; not exactly the year you want, but I've just bought
Willmer's 1915-16 directory of Birkenhead, on CD. The reproduction isn't great, but just about legible. Here's the bookbinders listed. hope this may be of help.

Cheers, Chris.

Hi there!!

My husband is a trained bookbinder so that means a bookbinder would work at a printers cos thats where he works.

I would imagine in 1911 there would be a huge choice of print works as there was no other way people could get at books, newspapers or magazines. A bookbinder can also be known as a print finisher, as the work is to sew and bind a finished printed work, ie a book.

I do hope this helps.

There was a printers called the Merseyside Press, situated off either Claughton Rd. or Oliver street in the 60s, I don't know how long they had been in business, the building looked ancient, they printed Vernons coupons besides magazines and books, does anyone remember them?
