I was driving down Liscard Crescent yesterday on the way to the Bank (what else is there in Liscard to justify a visit?) I noticed that the restaurant next to Pet Needs (La Gondola?) was being worked on.

The sineage had been taken down and underneath you could see the old original shop signs for the Hobbies shop and John Clement glazing next door.

I remember going to the Hobbies shop to spend my pocket money about 40 years ago.

If I had not been in a hurry I would have taken a photograph, anyone else remember the Hobbies shop?

Guy who owned the Hobbies Shop used to live at the bottom of Wallacre Road on the left. I can picture him now in my mind but cannot remember his name. His son, Tommy Roberts (butcher from Village) son Eddie and I were friends in our mid-late teens. Eddie went on to become a motorcycle champ and now runs a specialist tyre business.

the thing about hobbies shops lately is they very rarely last, remember the one on your way to central park from liscard by david arnold bakers, and the one that used to be on the corner on mill lane where's there's a sandwich shop now. or the one at the bottom of seaview road on the corner, that didn't get much business so moved/downsized down to the bottom of victoria road in new brighton and again, doesn't get much business really.

i don't think it'll last 12 months personally but let's see how it goes.

Sorry, this isn't a new business, it is just that the sign for the old Hobbies Shop has been exposed during building work on the restaurant.

I spotted the work going on as well, so I waited until he had finished for the day, and took this.

Just been past and the original signs have how been stripped off, back to bare brickwork. I don't know exactly when they went or where they are now, just incase someone was thinking of diving into a skip for a momento of local history.

Wonder if La Gondola's menu reflects its earlier history?

Honey 'glazed' ham, perhaps, with glazed carrots & parsnips. Mediterranean salads with balsa-mic vinger dressing. Or maybe balsamic glaze just goes on everything! raftl

(Yeah, and they'd better be using Kraft cheese...)
