From Radio Times Website:
Review by:David Gillard Shostakovich’s mighty Seventh Symphony — the Leningrad, a great rallying cry of defiance against the Nazis who besieged the city for 900 terrible days during the Second World War — is the commanding focus of this concert by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vasily Petrenko.
A lighter mood is set by the programme’s openers, John Adams’s The Chairman Dances — an “out-take” from his opera Nixon in China in which Chairman Mao dances a foxtrot — and the UK premiere of Enchantements oubliés by the Chinese-born composer Qigang Chen, the man behind the music at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
About this programme Live from Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, presented by Stuart Flinders. Vasily Petrenko conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in music by Shostakovich and John Adams, and the UK première of Enchantements Oubliés by Chinese-born composer Qigang Chen.
