With the centenary of the sinking of the “Titanic” approaching, it might be interesting to identify any connections that Wirral had with the disaster.

There’s the Ismay family’s connection with “Dawpool” at Thurstaston, though I’m not sure whether the infamous J. Bruce Ismay ever lived there. And, of course, the equally infamous Stanley Lord, Captain of the “Californian” who lived all his married life in Wallasey, from where he fought to clear his name, and is buried in Rake Lane cemetery.

But with Wirral’s seafaring past, surely some of the crew came from here. Perhaps even a passenger or two?

The main connection with the Wirral and the Titanic is that they are both disasters!! :-)

Don't know of any local people but I'm related to Harold Bride who was the second Radio Operator on the Titanic. He survived and as far as I know was picked up by the Carpathia, were he helped wire messages back about survivors.

From the Merseyside Maritime Museum website: 'At least ninety members of Titanic’s crew on that tragic voyage (about 1 in 10) were from Merseyside or had close links with the area. Most of her key officers and crew had originally sailed from Liverpool for White Star, and many still lived there in 1912.'

Thanks, yoller - plenty to find out about then. Here's one I've discovered:

Charles John Joughin (3 August 1878 – 9 December 1956) was the chief baker on the RMS Titanic. Joughin was born in Birkenhead on 3 August 1878. He survived in the freezing water for an exceptionally long time. After up to three hours in the water (estimates vary), he was found by Collapsible B and pulled onto the overturned boat. Joughin died in Paterson, New Jersey on 9 December 1956 at the age of 78.

Apparently, Joughin became famous as the “Drunken Baker of the Titanic”, having consumed vast quantities of whisky while the ship was sinking (he put this down as the reason he survived for so long in the water). He still did his duty, however, loading fresh bread into the lifeboats and later helping women into the boats and throwing chairs for those in the water to hang on to.

He is recorded as being probably the last one to leave the ship alive. He climbed to the stern which stood nearly 150 feet above the water, tightened his life belt and waited for the ship to sink. As it slipped below the surface, he stepped off into the water without even wetting his hair. This episode featured in the film “A Night to Remember”

I have the book "A Night to Remember" by Walter Lord. Quite a screed on Charles Joughin. As you rightly say nightwalker, at 2-15am he put his watch in his pocket and stepped off the sinking stern. "It was like taking an elevator" he said afterwards. (Some elevator!)

I can't figure out how he didn't get dragged down. Even wearing a lifebelt, the suction of the stern section sinking would have pulled him under ?

Whisky or no whisky, he did his utmost to help others. What a guy!

I helped a guy from the states located his great grandparents grave at St Albans church. His great grandfather survived the Titanic. His name was Daly and was a first class passenger. The family lived for many years at Marymount in Mill lane Wallasey which later became Marymount convent.

I believe he further emigrated to South America and was very big in building railways. His grandson the man I helped lived in Argentina until Peron came to power and they lost all their money so moved to the states.

Wow. Do you have a book I could refer to for that info? Would love to get hold of it.

According to Wikipedia in the entry for his father, Bruce Ismay did not live at Dawpool:In July 1882,the building of a private residence in Thurstaston on the Wirral Peninsula, designed by the renowned architect Richard Norman Shaw. Built of a local red sandstone, the property was completed in December 1884. It was named Dawpool and, when Ismay's widow died in 1907, both of his sons declined to take up residence. When the Ismay's tried selling the home, the agent said the land would be worth more if the home was blown up[citation needed] and it was eventually sold to a Mr Rutter who loaned to the government as a hospital during World War I. In 1926 it was sold to Sir Henry Roberts who had it demolished a year later.
