Surely it rather depends on how big the tank is???
I have noticed that these days new cars seem to have bigger capacity tanks

My LandRover (Freelander) had a piddling little tank and would only do around 150 miles/ tank before I felt "insecure" about the gague reading. Typical mpg was 30 on a good (motorway) run.

I now have a Meriva 1.4 Turbo and that does 40 mpg on the Mway. Dunno the size of the tank but I have done 200 miles and it has only dropped to near half way on the gague

The motorbike (650 BMW) will turn in 68-70 mpg

I stuck £60 in my Saab the other day and got half a tank, the reserve holds £20, I average 21mpg, it's a 2.3 turbo petrol

My gsi averages 19-23mpg, 2.0 twin cam 16v running high octane.

most cars are 60ltr or 90 ltr fuel tanks. bigger cars (2ltr plus) seem to be 90ltr and your corsas etc are usually 60ltr.

60 ltr will cost about 75 to fill up aand your 90 ltr will cost about 115.

I am sure there are exceptions to this like 4X4 cars etc but this is a general rule of thumb. The trucks i used to drive had twin 500ltr tanks, thats nearly 1500 every time you fill up. any truck driver will tell you thats its usually a couple of times a week.

gulp.

My Beemer (530d) has a 70l tank, and the trip computer shows 700 miles range when I fill it up - she averages 50mpg+ on a run. Not bad for a 3.0 with near 300bhp and masses of torque wink
