Interesting to see the people who shunned him and turned him away and those who freely gave him shelter and some food. The latter ranging from a piece of chocolate to a full blown meal, drinks and treated as one of the family. Having the door slammed in his face at a Rectory to being accepted by the most humble of folk. He didn't thumb lifts at all, but did accept offers of a lift to the edge of towns to resume his walk north.

One of the few books I've read of late that is difficult to put down. Highly recommended !
Hi that sounds like a good book i might just buy mtself that to take on holiday smile

Jabber, I could not get into the Stig Larson books but thought the films were great.

I have just finished 'Memoir' by John McGahern. ISBN 0-571-22810-0.It is one of the most beautiful and sad books I have read.It is the story of his childhood, his love for his mother, her death, his father's anger, his discovery of literature.McGahern's description of the fields and quiet roads of Co Leitrim and life in 1940/50's Catholic Ireland, life of hardship on a farm and police barrack life is well worth reading.
McGahern called 'Ireland's greatest living novelist' by Observer and 'as close as we get to Proust' by Guardian. He died in 2005.

Now reading 'A History of Wales' by John Davies.ISBN0-713-99098-8
'The greatest book of Welsh history ever written' Dafydd Elis Thomas-Hansard, Parliamentary Debates.
