Graphics card doesn't make that much difference, plenty of hdd, memory and processor speed.

Got to be a well cooled processor, video editing can run the processor flat out for extended periods.

There's nothing you could do with a mac that you can't do with a cheaper windows machine.

What exactly is it you're editing? If you're talking about 5min youtube videos any standard machine will be fine. Pick up a box from ebuyer for like £250 and that'd do the job. If you're talking about serious HD editing it'd be worth aiming for 6-8gb RAM and a decent aftermarket air heatsink for whatever CPU you end up with (i5 or i7 ideally).

IMO:

People prefer using a mac for editing not only because a top of the range mac is much more powerful than say a top end Dell BUT because the Mac has a better OS for things like video and music related things.

the top end mac costs... wait for it... £16000!

You can however if you want a MAC but cant afford one build a Hack! hackintosh is a MAC OSX operating system running on a normal PC. exactly the same in every way, you can even get a mouse and keyboard.

a budget of about £1000 will see you with the perfect PC for video editing, Ram is quite cheap at the moment so i would even consider putting 12gb in, nice 120gb solid state drive and an i7.

If your budget is sub 500 quid though... i5 and 8gb of ram should get you started.

I love buying top notch computers!!

just spotted this, have a watch of the vid.

Apple do a mac mini, we have one for graphics work and its far superior to a PC, and far more stable, you just need to get a monitor and an apple keyboard as when you buy it, you just get the mac. You can sometimes get them on ebay,

yer I use HD MP4 and AVCHD Format up to 120FPS, My current Desktop is a self build quadcore 3gbRam 1gb ATI on win7 (about 3-4 years old I think). I dont know If I should just upgrade my current PC... I have the funds to buy a good spec one but as you posted that link before I know building my own is better/cheaper I just havent got a clue whats good anymore or where to buy from. Im gonna have a look on that ebuyer now.

Are Macs any good at video editing? Any of the current range will be allow you to do some type of video editing. (As long as you aren't talking about the AppleTV ;))

You will more than likely get better spec for the money by going for a Windows or Linux based machine. However, if you post your budget, form factor (i.e. desktop or laptop) and the Mac you are looking at we can say for certain one way or the other.

The most expensive system listed on the Mac webstore is the Mac Pro "12 core" (2x 6 core Intel Xeon processors) for £4083. Whilst you will need a monitor with that, even the 27" Apple Cinema Display is 'only' £899.

Depending on budget: Intel i5 2500K or i7 2600K in a H67 or Z68 chipset motherbaord. 8GB+ of DDR3 1600MHz. 120/128GB SATA3 SSD for a boot drive. 1-2TB HDD for storage drives. BluRay burner...

Either recycle your graphics card or add in nothing lower than the GeForce 550Ti or Radeon HD 5770.

Could prob get away with a 64gb boot drive (OCZ Vertex 2 or something) and make sure you get a decent case (HAF - X is awesome if you don't mind shelling out for it) with a decent top fan and a few quiet 120mm's. A good PSU (coolermaster gold or corsair tx 750w) would help as well.

Also you'll want a decent aftermarket cooler to go with i5/i7, worth picking up a H50 from amazon to cool it. Doesn't really count as watercooling since it's just a block and a pump/rad combined but they perform quite well.

Check out that picture I linked above Andy. The mac section? That's all about you. Keep hugging that £2k apple while I edit the same videos on my £300 nix box that runs faster than your mac did when you first got it.

There's 3 types of people that get macs:

1) professional djs/music/photo engineers that are power users (about 0.01% of mac users fall into this category)
2) people that like shiny apple hardware and have more money than sense (about 9.99% of users)
3) people that take advice from people like you because they don't know better (the other 90% of users)
