Is it me or does McAfee computer security drive anyone else up the wall? My computer is constantly slow, freezes and "not responding". McAfee scans everytime I switch the damn thing on, it scans even when I say "dont scan". My blood pressure rises very swiftly when I'm online. I'm blaming McAfee cos Ive been told its crap. Can anyone recommend any other security for the computer free or otherwise.
Im blaming McAfee but maybe it's my computer!
Any help appreciated
Chris

Yep - the first thing I did with my new laptop was to uninstall Norton which is just as bad.
I use Avast whixh is free and have no problems but there are several available

I got Avast (AVG) and Comodo fire wall. Both free and touch wood no problems so far.Avast does update very often but apart from slowing you down while it updates it does it in the background so you carry on regardless. It does sound though that you have got the scan settings wrong on McAfee, it should not scan that often.I set it just to scan overnight each Thursday, so you may want to try that until your McAfee subscription ends and I hope you have not signed up for automatic credit card renewal although they do warn you well in advance.

I have to say, I have McAfee and it's a pain in the arrse sometimes. I only keep it as it's free and I know what I'm doing with it. I didn't like Norton at all. I put up with it because I don't have the nouse to try and fathom any others out raftl It does make mine unresponsive and slow sometimes though.

I'd recommend Avast! , I've used it for about four years & have it installed on several pc's / laptops . Reasonably light on resources , regular updates & doesn't slow your pc down .

How have you got McAfee for free?? Was it on your computer when you got it?

I'll have a nose about it. Is it simple to use?

I'll have a nose at that too then Phil. I'm just a total spoon when it comes to computers frown

I'd go MSE over Avira. Avira has lower detection rates and their hueristics are fubar. Every single crack or keygen or script is apparently dangerous according to Avira. Plus you have to hack around that awful avnotify.exe that Avira loves to spam. Hate to say it, but Microsoft has the edge this time. MSE is a smaller memory imprint as well.

I don't run AV myself but when I'm fixing machines it's MSE I install. I usually put the setup file the malwarebytes as well, 99% of the time malwarebytes will solve any problems.

I've been wondering about MSE for antivirus, never looked at it closely because I assumed it had the gaping holes in it similar to Windows Firewall.
