Uh, they have problems with their SSL it seems. Wouldn't advise using Usenet without ssl/proxy.

Their listed port is 433? Wurd.

Edit: Not sure why they are listing the https ssl port instead of the nntps port!

Port(s): 119, 80, 563(SSL), 443(SSL)

*Download secure via SSL*
XS Usenet allows you to connect to our service using an encrypted connection. For usage of SSL you will need to configure your settings to use ports 563 or 443. For regular connections you may use 80 or 119.

From my activation email, in case it helps.

Nah. 1Mbps? Might as well use dial-up.

Use these instead:
http://www.eternal-september.org/
http://aioe.org/

Both free and well maintained.

This one is 10€/year but well worth it:
http://news.individual.net/

They all support SSL.

https is 443, not 433.

They're doing this for users of ISPs that block outgoing access to 119 (nntp) or 563 (nntps) but allow access to secure (https://) websites.
