omg!!

seams head of 6th form at weatherhead has told the upper 6th form whoever gets over 95% attendeance by end of November will go into a draw to win an Ipad 2!!

i'm disgusted this money could be spent on paper, glue etc etc things the kids need in there...

yes its nice for the peron who wins it but why not a smaller item, ipod shuffle or ?

plus if the kids want to be late, miss school then more fool them its thee responsibility at 17/18 to turn up to school to learn for their A2's...

rant over blush

Seems like a good idea to me.

Basic iPad 2 is pretty cheap when compared to the overall budget.

However, if it keeps the kids in school because they really want to win it, and the school grades go up etc etc then the cost of the iPad will no doubt pay for itself.

I don't think kids need glue in schools much anymore, definitely not sixth formers!

maybe it was donated to the school or came free as an incentive for an order they may have placed ie new computers

£400 is merely a dent in a budget, especially in a school, I suspect much larger cost savings could be made elsewhere.

Truancy is a real problem. If the parents don't care about the children going in on time or can't be there to ensure it happens, children need an incentive. I don't see the problem.

Kids are incredibly competitive, a reward is a great way to achieve attendance. I've known schools to give out big laser etched awards to pupils with 100% attendance, I would love to have tried to win something like this, on a day perhaps when I was feeling a little under the weather it would have encouraged me to go in. It's a great lesson to learn for employment.

yes i guess it is, it was my daughter, she came in from school quite angry about it as the school are always complaining they don't have the money for this, that and the other..
she'll be one of them in the running...which she said yes, would be nice to win, but she thinks the school could spend the money more wisely...

by the way Sally, did you accept morrisons?
or have you started your other job?

You realise that these are kids you're talking about, yes? Kids that like to go out and have fun - go to parties and such? Especially considering their friends may not be doing sixth form.

Perhaps the 'be responsible for your own education and go to school' might have worked at one point but I don't think it does anymore. I'd be surprised if most kids that go to sixth form don't just do so because they have no idea what they want to do with their life and their friends are doing sixth form.

Missing a few days of sixth form is not majorly important to people like this. Nor should it be, if they are responsible enough to go to sixth form they should be responsible for their actions if they decide they want a break from school for a few days.

Food for thought.

my daughter is 17 and is in her last year of 6th form and works damn hard for her results all through the year and it paid off with AS results being A's
but she also needs her A2's to be high to get the uni course she wants..

her words to me when i congratulated on her high results where ' you get out of it what you put into it'
thats also why she was in top 10 with her GCSE results last year.
she knows for the course she wants at uni she has to get top marks and won't get that by taking time off school
they have quite a lot of free periods in a day too..

and no she doesn't feel like she is missing anything as she has said to me she wants a career, not a job..

and hopefully with hard work, dedication , plus time out with friends she will reach her goal..

just like her older brothers have...

so i think that the kids need to take responsibility as in uni its all down to them, no one chasing them for deadlines..they have to do that and get things in on time...

'Kids' and 'Responsibility' don't go together.

'Kids' and 'iPad' do.

Simple as that.

There's people in sixth form that aren't there to follow a career like your daughter though. Those are the people this sort of competition is aimed at, I think.
