Wirral Council is to cut 1,100 jobs within the next four months after a budget cut of £40m.

The redundancies - which the council said would be voluntary - were approved on Monday night as part of the borough's 2011-12 budget.

But the Tory-Lib Dem council said extra money would be invested in Sure Start and library services - which last year were threatened with closure.

About 6,000 people - excluding those in education - work for the authority.

more cuts=more people facing poverty=more people having to apply for benefits=more being penalised by the government.
and so on and so on.

God knows what the 2012-13 budget will look like. Hopefully the Tories will be gone by then. I wonder when the British people are going to get off their collective bottoms and fight back.

If Wirral Borough Council weren't so corrupt, didn't spend HUGE sums of money trying to bury their mistakes and employ outside contractors to do work that they have full-time staff for their savings could be made much easier with minimal job losses.

Spot on Doc.especially the bit about employing contractors, the education department spends millions on contractors rather than use in house council staff. It's all about people not wanting to lose their little empires.

Unfortunately there is a naive belief that private is always more efficient than public. Contracting-out is not always the most efficient way to provide public services. A good example of this is Colas who do the road maintenance for the council and the crappy bus companies that provide Merseytravel's subsidised servies.

The obsession with contracting out is blame-management, the public departments blame the contractors and say they are responsible.

We are gradually contracting out everything so the politicians can then be blame free.

Very true. There isn't much left. The parks are next. Not looking forawrd to that. Amazing that a Labour council has privatised so much. That's usually the Tories job! mad

Despite all the evidence (including the government's own reports) that privatising all the schools doesn't work, they are still pushing ahead with that road-to-nowhere, NHS is the next big one, its already on the stepping-stone.

I seem to be having a hyphen day today???
