Actor Rowan Atkinson is in a stable condition after he crashed his McLaren F1 super car which caught fire.

The Blackadder star is believed to have suffered a shoulder injury when the car hit a tree and lamppost, near Peterborough.

He is said to have walked from the car after the crash, on the A605 at Haddon on Thursday evening, and waited for an ambulance.

He was admitted to hospital and is expected to be discharged later.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to put out the fire.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews brought the fire under control by 8.13pm. They made the vehicle safe and used one hose reel to put out the fire.

"There was one casualty but he was not trapped."

East of England Ambulance Service said a man was taken to Peterborough City Hospital with "a minor shoulder injury" following the crash.

Atkinson, 56, known to be a car enthusiast, recently topped the leader's board on BBC Top Gear's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car contest.

He told presenter Jeremy Clarkson he was keen on racing and was currently driving a 1964 Ford Falcon.

The star notched up the fastest time on the show, broadcast on 17 July, completing the circuit in a Kia Cee'd in 1 minute 42.2 seconds.

Atkinson achieved fame through BBC shows Not The Nine O'Clock News and Blackadder, before gaining international recognition in Mr Bean, in which his hapless character drives an old Mini.

It's quite amazing he's relatively ok after the speed he was going at!

Question is: Why was he doing such a speed?

I believe he has suffered a broken shoulder.

Am I being thick as I can't see a reference to speed?

It would take a sneeze and a small prod of the loud pedal to get that thing sideways and out of control.

I know I read it somewhere else, on the daily mail i think, he was going 100mph+...

I can't see it in that article and the picture doesn't look like a 100mph crash.

Police have said it didn't burst into flames though.

Any more assumptions?
Why was he doing such a speed? Nowhere does it suggest he was speeding. Unless I am wrong, if so please point me in right direction to where it says he was speeding, and I will apologize

hmmm maybe I am wrong - although I am sure i read it somewhere he was speeding...

All said even if he wasn't speeding - something's going wrong coz it's not the first time he's crashed that car...

It's not an easy car to drive, and its fookin fast.

But yeah, I doubt he does that many miles in it.

Obviously driving with his Mr Bean head firmly afixed. So long as he is ok that's the main thing.

Speeding or not he must have been travelling at a fair rate of knots, all the rear suspension is missing inc engine and gearbox
