PEOPLE dropping litter on the streets of Wirral risk being fined by a team of enforcement officers operating in the borough.

In an effort to maintain high standards of street cleanliness, particularly around town and village centres, the Council has extended its partnership with contractor NSL to tackle people who drop litter.

Anyone caught littering faces a £75 fixed penalty, reduced to £50 if they pay within 10 days.

During a recent campaign in Birkenhead and Liscard town centres, four fixed penalty notices were issued.

Councillor Harry Smith, Wirral's cabinet member for Streetscene and transport services, said: "The cleanliness of our streets and the general environmental appearance of our local shopping areas is something we know the public are deeply concerned about.

"As a result, a programme of cleaning and improving these areas is underway.

"In order to ensure this improvement programme has a noticeable and long-lasting effect, we are using our existing contract with NSL to train and authorise their staff to enforce the law around litter on our behalf.

"Hopefully, the issuing of fixed penalty notices during the recent campaign will serve to encourage people to dispose of their litter properly in future, rather than risk being fined."

Tim Cowen, of NSL, added: "Our Civil Enforcement Officers are a high-profile presence on streets in towns and cities all over the UK, and where we do environmental enforcement we find they are a very effective deterrent against littering.

"We are delighted we will be working to keep Wirral's streets clean and tidy."

Further litter patrols will take place around all local centres on a regular basis in the coming weeks and months.

Why would any one not want to put litter in a bin, we all live in the area, do some people actually want to live in a untidy place.

You'd be surprised. Some people just do not care.

Cigarette ends is another one. If everyone did it we'd be walking around on cigarette butts everywhere.

I saw someone today out side post office parked up, open his car door and empty his ash tray on the kerb, i felt like picking it all up, and throwing it back in his car, that would off been funny.

on the subject of fag butts...

we live on a small side road and get loads of people parking here who work in liscard. one woman used to park up, have a fag and then drop the butt out of the window.
i was walking home one morning and caught her dropping one, i picked it up as she opened her car door and politely told her 'you've dropped something, try using your ash tray you lazy cow' and passed it back to her.

the next day i watched her park from inside the house and then empty the contents of her car ash tray onto the pavement with a smug smile on her face.

i also was there to watch her face when she came back to her car at the end of the day to discover that someone had superglued 20 odd fag butts over her car wink

funnily enough she never parked down our road again smile

Good one
Must remember
We get the same problem from people parking outside our house

Smoking in the car is bad enough without using the ashtray to stink it out!
Cars these days don't come with lighters or ashtrays. I have a Volvo S60 and there's not 1 ashtray in sight! Good riddance.

Just let the litter police hank out outside any McDonalds, they will make a fortune out of the litter dropping ... there
