Convicted wife killer Eddie Gilfoyle is freedA WIRRAL man convicted of murdering his pregnant wife has been cleared for release from prison after 18 years amid reports of a gagging condition. Eddie Gilfoyle, 49, was freed from Sudbury open prison in Derbyshire on Wednesday on the condition he did not directly or indirectly contact the media, according to The Times.
Gilfoyle's wife Paula was found hanged in the garage of their home in Upton in 1992.
A source said Gilfoyle had appeared before a parole board and had been cleared for release. A statement released on Gilfoyle's behalf through a campaign group protesting his innocence suggested his legal team would be appealing against the gagging condition, which reportedly includes his family, supporters and lawyers. It said: "We are not able to provide a response because the Parole Board has imposed a condition on Eddie's life licence that prohibits him contacting the media either directly or indirectly whether this is regarding his release or his appeal." A spokesman for the Parole Board said he could not comment on individual cases but said a condition banning prisoners from talking to the media would be imposed to prevent further offending. He said: "Any prisoner who is released is released if we reach a judgment that he is safe to release and that he is not going to go on to commit another offence. "It is sometimes the case that one of the licence conditions is that the prisoner being released doesn't get involved with the media. If that is the case, the only reason for that condition would be to prevent further offending. "For instance, it might be the case that if a high-profile prisoner talks to the media after he has been released, there would be issues concerning the feelings of the victims. "There might be concerns about the reaction of the general public to someone who has been released from a life sentence." According to The Times, Conservative peer Lord Hunt of Wirral, who was Gilfoyle's former constituency MP, was also included in the media ban. The newspaper claimed he wrote to the Parole Board asking that Gilfoyle and his team be allowed to speak freely. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice said she could not comment on any individual cases. Peter Glover, Paula's brother-in-law, said: "As far as we are concerned, Eddie Gilfoyle is still guilty and always will be. He murdered our Paula. "I had a niece, who Paula was carrying when she died and she would have been 18 this year but he took that away. He should not have been released." THE GLOBE

So did he actually kill or not? Well he was convicted and had at least one appeal turned down. I thought that to get parole you had to acknowledge your guilt?

If he had acknowledge his guilt, he refused to do so, he would have been out earlier.

There is only one, possibly two people who know how it went. Himself if he was the one who did it and A.N. Other if he didn't. Seems a lot of circumstantial evidence to me, but I know noffink. Either way the truth may out some time.

Eddie Gilfoyle claims he was “framed” for the Wirral murder of his pregnant wife CONVICTED Wirral murderer Eddie Gilfoyle spoke for the first time since his release on parole to declare he was “framed” over the death of his pregnant wife. In the House of Lords yesterday, the 59-year-old said: “You are looking at an innocent man who has spent 18 years in prison for something I didn’t do.
“I did not kill my wife and I did not kill my baby.”
Mr Gilfoyle was speaking for the first time since he was released in December and since the January lifting of a gagging order preventing him speaking to the media. He was convicted of murdering wife Paula, 33, who was found hanged in their garage in Upton, Wirral, in 1992 but has protested his innocence throughout. He and his supporters levied a series of allegations aimed at every level of the justice system, from Merseyside Police officers at the scene to current Justice Secretary Ken Clarke. Their case, currently with the criminal cases review commission, is that crucial evidence pointing to a suicide rather than a murder was either deliberately withheld or lost. Mr Gilfoyle said: “At every stage, they have tried to cover it up. “Merseyside Police destroyed the scene and destroyed evidence. “The police knew that I was innocent from day one. “It was easier for me to be the fall guy for their misconduct and for their negligence. “I was framed, taken out of the system, put in prison.” He added: “I want my life back. I may be out of prison but I will always be a prisoner while this is hanging over my head.” He was backed by former Merseyside assistant chief constable Alison Halford. In a message read out by the family solicitor, Matt Foot, she said: “How sad it is that so many lives have been ruined by what was clearly a botched inquiry. “My faith in Eddie’s innocence is unswerving. “Sadly the perpetrators of this sorry mess are too arrogant or disingenuous to apologise.” Mr Foot said that the prosecution was built of “myths, fallacies and distorted evidence.” The latest appeal is focusing on recently- uncovered police notes allegedly showing that Mr Gilfoyle was at work when his wife died, claims of faulty evidence given to the jury that she could not have tied the rope to a roof beam, and the destruction of the rope itself and all other forensic material. Lord Hunt, a former Wirral MP and vice-chair of Justice, said: “At least some of the evidence has been uncovered. “At last the truth is coming to the surface.” A Merseyside Police spokesman said it would be inappropriate to comment on the case while it was under review.
