Was chatting today about giving blood
Seem to remember used to get picked up(1960s/1970s) from works by a passenger van and taken to I think the corner of Alvaney Place/Street? and Grange Rd West possibly a prefab building belonging to St Johns' First Aid - anybody remember and what's there now.
Where is it done nowadays

Any surgery will give you the gen or I suppose you could go on the net and find out from NHS direct. I used to give it but started flaking out after it so packed it in. It's a worthwhile thing though.
See that thing about organ donations in the paper? Scary stuff.

Ecuador Congress makes organ donations automatic
(AFP) – 1 day ago

QUITO — Ecuador's legislature has passed a bill that makes organ donations for transplant automatic at death unless a prospective donor has specifically requested otherwise.

The measure was passed Thursday by a vote of 111 to 124.

All Ecuadorans and foreigners legally residing in Ecuador who are 18 years of age or older would automatically donate their organs, tissue and human cells after death unless they indicate otherwise on their identity documents.

Those who choose not to become donors will not be discriminated against and their decision cannot be publicized, according to the bill.

If it is signed into law as expected by President Rafael Correa, the move will become mandatory for all health systems in Ecuador. It also allows Ecuadorans living abroad to request to be added on a waiting list for a transplant.

Foreign organ donations are prohibited under the measure.

Hate it when governments or organisations do it where you have to opt out of something instead of opting in - sly gets

I'm a card carrying donor, don't see anything wrong with it being compulsory, if people don't feel they want to be a donor, let them opt out, they can have anything they want off me once I'm dead, the wife feels the same, mind you, her vocal chords will be well worn out.

Myth: Rich and famous people go to the top of the list when they need a donor organ.
Fact: The rich and famous aren't given priority when it comes to allocating organs. It may seem that way because of the amount of publicity generated when celebrities receive a transplant, but they are treated no differently from anyone else. In fact, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the organization responsible for maintaining the national organ transplant network, subjects all celebrity transplants to an internal audit to make sure the organ allocation was appropriate

money talks - you can't tell me that a billionaire couldn't buy an organ by any means if it meant him having a few more years extra to live

I suppose the thought of having organs taken because not enough care had been taken to keep you alive goes along is now the version of the fear people used to have of being buried alive

If i was in that bad a way were they may as well kill me off to take an organ, i would thank them if i could. As far a rich people go, that market already exists, the far east i would think have plenty of organs going, wrong i know but it happens. As far as I'm concerned, if it gives someone a few extra years, good luck to them, no good to me where I'm going.
I'm not sure its possible to be buried alive legally anyway, whatever the undertaker pumps into you would probably kill you anyway.

am getting a bit gruesome now and a bit off topic - as usual one query leads on to another

How long does a body have to be dead before an organ can't be used.
eg If a heart stopped beating would it have to be within a certain time or the moment of pronounced dead
