Hi Folks,

Ok teddy is out the cot and I want to have a moan..

Years ago I would get a job and that was that.

Now, in my current business I need to do two course. One every two years ( I am in date) and the other one I did in March has now been updated and has to be done by the end of the year, So that will be ninety notes for another piece of paper.

Then there is the scottish disclosure, waste of time, as if its a month old then some places ask you to get a new one!

Then there is trade societies, unions etc.

Should I change career? nope still the same problems

Sod it, I will get an extra five lottery tickets this weekend

lol, grumpy nomad

So what? Cant you claim the costs back from your company? Do you get £40k per anum for this job? What is it you actually do?

Hi Nigel,

Just to clarify what I was moaning about.

It just that I've noticed that jobs now aday require you to have a certificate in something or other,

For example you need to have food handling certificates to work in that industry, doorman need to have certs now.

I am not saying its a bad thing as in todays world, with health and safety, as it stops the chancers turning up.

My moan was because I have only just found out about the updated cert.

As I am self employed, then all costs are paid by me.

Is this not something you could factor into the hourly rate you charge to your customers my friend?

I wish but sadly no. I get a call from one of several agencies about a job, they tell me the rate and conditions and I either take the job or decline.

I seem to have built up quite a collection of certificates over the years (now aged 44). Missing the most important one though - cyclicling profecciency.

Have you checked out any subsidised courses at college/training organisations in your area? - sometimes if you work for a small company then you could pay less. I remember reading about a Discretionary Support Fund - helps with books, travel, etc. Employers sometimes offer to pay your course but that usually has a catch, could be them holding a bond (you pay something out of your wages every week) whereby you work for them for some years before you get all the bond money back. The government are so unfair on people who want to better themselves and want these certificate qualifications achieved to carry on working in their jobs. Hope you get some funding somehow. Good luck.

Hi Gloria,

Thank you for you reply, I have come across bonded courses before but my main problem is I work for myself.

My point is often these so called cert quals are job related and are not quals as such and of no use any where else.

I throw my teddy out the cot because I am currently not working and suddenly get another bill to pay.

On the good side I did get full funding for the OU next Jan

OK had my rant and calmed down now. lol

I don't disagree with certification, but hate how most certificates are academic based. I'm sure most of us has come across people with qualifications up to the hilt and not a clue how to do the job.

I suppose it started a long time ago with , let say, the masons.

when you finished your apprenticeship you were given passwords so that you prove to someone else that you had successfully graduated

Now these days you get a handful of printed A4 sheets but thats not enough.

You then need security cert as in scots disclosure for example

Some sort of health and safety cert is usually required as well

and refresher courses.

I have had my fair share of "academics" in enginnering but they could only do the job on paper! Plus they thought they were better than you for having a degree. Well this applied to most but not all of them in fairness.

Oh yes. I'm certainly not saying all are useless.
The same applies to some degrees. Some are very much beneficial. others are just to have a piece of paper and some letters after your name.
