Are there any members on here that can do boiler replacements and are fully registered.

We currently have a convential boiler with header tank, cylinder etc, we need this system removing and a new combi boiler fitting.

PM me please.

I hate combi's, I would ideally get a high-efficiency system boiler to feed the tank and, if necessary, replace the tank with a high-insulation one.

Advantages:- Higher hot water flow rates, no temperature fluctuations, faster hot water supply, storage for when things go wrong, back-up with electric immersion heater, airing cupboard.

If you do get a combi, get one with loads of power and modulated flame. Cheaper combi's have the flame on or off (or sometimes two levels of flame), at low flow rates this often means the water alternates between hot or cold. There may be other ways of combating that problem.

Using system boilers with tanks is a waste for most people. Yes it's good to have a backup immersion, but with an electric shower and kettle you'll have hot water in an emergency. It's not like you'd leave your heating broke for 3 weeks if there was a problem.

We have an old tank in our house that I'm in the process of hacking out. With only a shower at present and a sink in the kitchen, there is no way we'd use a full tank of water so to heat it would be a waste as it would be cold again by the next use.

I think in the most part its down to what is the consumption rate of the hot water, a large family taking baths is obviously going to be different from a couple taking showers, in my own household of only two and taking showers with cold feed white goods, a well insulated tank takes very little heating and lasts for a couple of days, hot enough for hand and face washing, it also warms up when the heating is on anyway, so no real extra cost. anyone who is getting a combi should always remember to put a radiator in the airing cupboard.

The one thing that annoyed me about system boilers was waiting for the water to heat up. Coming back of holiday or if my partner had been in the bath and used all the water.

Yes combi boilers do have disadvantages but always getting as much hot water as you need a few seconds after turning on the tap isn't one of them.

Neat trick with tanks, if there are a few baths on the trot, stick the immersion and the boiler on at the same time, despite various myths, there is no damage can occur but the tank will re-heat in the time it takes to have a bath.

With a decent power boiler the tank should heat up in just over half an hour from cold (without the immersion on) if the feed is pumped and a high efficiency tank - system boilers are also physically very small compared to combis.

I can't abide with the time it takes to fill a bath with combis, such a poor flow rate - just starting to get used to it now.

It must work out expensive to have an immersion heater running as well as the boiler, electric showers can't be that expensive ( not that i know the figures ) but i certainly feel they are more hygienic.

Once it become compulsery to have a water meter to every property, baths will then soon become redundant. Yes showering is far more hygienic than taking a bath and laying in water that full of dead skin.

I wanted to plumb my toilet rainwater harvesting system into the bath as well as the bog to save a few dollars, but the missus discounted the idea quite quickly!
