It looks like I may need to move house pretty soon. I don't have much stuff and it will be going a short distance across Wirral. I am wondering if its better value to hire one of those man and van people you see advertising by the road quite often or just hire a transit for a day myself and pay one of the lads in work to help me with the bigger items for a couple of hours.

I am finding it hard to get hire prices on the net and Wallasey van hire's website appears to be down at the moment.

Try BVH mate, I did.

Altho a dedicated house mover is so much better. You get to boss them around and if anything breaks it's thier fault smile

Yes, but some of these that advertise are just `a man and a van` personally i wouldn`t trust any old tom, dick or harry to move my belongings smile

Can highly recommend John Mighall if you want someone else to do it. Obviously it will cost a bit more, but they are extremely fast, very professional and they do of course carry liability insurance etc, should anything get broken. They provided me all the boxes and materials within the package and plenty of advice to help things run smoothly.

I had them in to move my belongings into my new place back in March, and could not fault them, fantastic, and the entire move was done within 2 hours! And I didnt have to lift a finger (though I did give them a hand as I wanted to).

They were extra specially careful with my massive fish tank, and did not get a scratch on anything. Also, they had to move my stuff down a flight of stairs into the lift on the odds floor as the lift on my floor was off, and up to the second floor in my new place. Throughout they were happy and polite, not a single pffft in sight, despite the fact I was on the 8th floor in my old place, so certainly people who enjoy their jobs (which is precisely what you want to see when your trusting them move thousands of pounds worth of stuff).

Thanks everyone!. I will weigh up the options and your recomendations as soon as I know when I have to be out.

I reckon the lot will fit in an average sized transit type van. Also I probably will shift the small stuff in the car in the days leading up to it. Im moving from a flat so I don't have much stuff plus the sofa/chairs are going on E Bay tomorrow so no need to move that lot.
