from Wilmers 1916 street directory

70 Argyle Street Society 0f Amalgamated Tool Makers

Formed in 1882 as the National Society of General Tool Makers, Engineers and Machinists, the Society later became known as the Amalgamated Society of General Toolmakers, Engineers and Machinists. A successful Union, it was one of the founders of the Federation of Engineering and Shipbuilding Trades and by 1915 could boast over 21000 members in 51 branches. The Union merged with other Unions to form the Amalgamated Engineering Union in 1920.

Hope someone can back further to find out what the building was originally

Not sure what the building was originally, the builders yard behind the Empire was still there in the seventies, dealt with them a couple of times. NO 28 next to the Empire was a DIY shop, that was there for years, Dad and lad ran it, that closed in the eighties i think, the likes of B&Q seen them in.
The surgery in the early fifties was occupied by two Doctors, Dr Livingston and Dr Snell.

God help us,
Come yourself,
Don't send Jesus,
This is no place for children.
