ALMOST all of Wirral's schools and colleges will be back open on Monday, having been closed this week due to the big freeze.

After taking account of the current weather forecast, traffic and road conditions on main transport routes, and public and school transport provision, the following advice has been given to schools by Wirral Council:

Primary Schools

From Monday, January 11, 2010, all primary schools are advised to open.

If full opening is not possible then partial opening should be considered.

As at 4pm Friday, January 8, 2010, we are aware of only one primary school which cannot open on Monday, which is St Laurence’s, Birkenhead due to a heating failure.

All other primary schools are expected to open.

Many primary schools are situated on non primary or secondary gritting routes and parents/carers should give careful consideration to the safest approach routes to schools.

Some primary schools intend opening on a staggered basis to assist traffic flow on Monday, January 11.

Parents are asked to consult individual school websites [or indeed the Globe's].

There will be no specialist transport provision on Monday, January 11 for pupils who are normally collected from home.

Secondary Schools

All secondary schools have been advised to open on Monday, January 11 and as at 4pm on Friday, January 8, all secondary schools have indicated that they will open on Monday.

Parents/carers are asked to check individual school websites for any specific arrangements for pupils.

Merseytravel have indicated that their contractors will provide school bus services wherever possible but these may operate on gritted routes only and therefore services routes may vary.

There will be no specialist transport provision on Monday, January 11 for pupils who are normally collected from home.

Special Schools

All special schools have been advised to remain CLOSED on Monday, January 11 as there will be no specialist transport provision for pupils.

A further risk assessment and discussions with the specialist transport providers will take place on Monday and a further update will be given.

Children’s Centres Nine Children’s Centres have been open today - Friday, January 8 - and it is anticipated that all Children’s Centres will be open on Monday, January 11.

Further Education

It is further anticipated that all Wirral Met College campuses and Birkenhead Sixth Form College will be open on Monday.

All the above is subject to weather conditions remaining as forecast over the weekend, with only light snow showers currently forecast as a possibility for Wirral on Sunday, January 10.

Should there be a marked deterioration in weather conditions over the weekend, parents should listen to announcements on local radio stations, and check the council website

It's great that they are planning to open, and i for one support this as my child hasn't yet been back to school since Xmas, but with more snow forecast Sunday night and all day Monday, how do they plan to open??

None of the roads between my home and my childs school are gritted, surely gritting around schools should be a priority, and on the pavements too.

in 1947 during the winter that was a lot worse than this one, none of the roads where gritted {no such thing in those days} yet we all went to school. Of course you walked to school in those days.

Do people not understand, the human body has these wonderful things called legs and attatched to them are feet... you put the right forward forward first, the left foot will follow, they call it walking.

You don't need the roads gritted for this.

Actually why you chose to assume I was a driver is beyond me, I mentioned the pavements as with most of them round ours being york stone and NOT gritted it is in my opinion too dangerous to let my daughter walk to school. She has walked to school either with me or alone for a while now, but there is currently no safe way to walk to her school.

Just a suggestion that they place some emphasis on the roads and pavements around schools being gritted, so it is safe to walk, especially with loads more snow forecast,

not so i can drive there!!

Okay people, so the council must grit all the pavements and all the roads, just so people can get about.

If this were to happen, you would then moan about the rise in council tax or income tax - these things do need to be paid for you know.

God only knows what people did before grtting was around - must have just become hermits and gone into winter hibernation or something.

People nowadays make me laugh - I used to walk to school no matter what the weather - in fact, ive done a fair bit of walking today, and its generally quite safe so long as you don't arse about. Oh, and if it snows on Monday, it will actually make it safer, as you will be walking on fresh snow and not ice, so I don't get the complaint.

You obviously just want to disagree so Im not really going to get into it other than to say it would be great like in the OLD days as you keep mentioning if we could all just walk but with increase in traffic, unsafe pavements even without ice on them i just want my child to be safe. Was just putting my tuppence in.

Wrapped in cotton wool comes to mind; if its that dangerous, get them a mountaineering/ski stick, or push them in a buggy.

People in this country are just fags, through and through; imagine if the comrades who fought in the world wars started crying and maoning and ceasing to work owhen a bit of snow came down and made it icy, we would'nt even be having this discussion.

What happened to resiliance. Britain is the laughing stock of the western world, and yet again, peoples attitudes show us up for being a nation of molly coddled nanny state-ified pussies!!

Oh and considering the kid's can't walk to school, there is plenty of them out on sledges and having snowball fights, running around throwing snowballs at cars etc...

Sounds very similar to the majority of the people on sick, the disability is present only when it's convenient.

Less cars on the road in 1947.

The only thing the council will be gritting for now will be main arterial routes, A roads. The grit is dwindling.

I work in a special school in south Liverpool and it can be very difficult for most of the pupils to get into school even if its not snowing! Some pupils end up sitting on a mini bus for nearly and hour and a half if they live in north Liverpool whilst the bus collects other pupils. In this weather they have been on the bus for almost 3hours which is very distressing on all accounts.Staying at school for a couple of hours then having to set off early. Our school has closed for a couple of days, stayed open for half day for parents who were really stuck but other than that we couldnt do much else. It's incredibly frustrating for everyone and I really empathise with parents who need some respite! I really hope the weather improves ...for the sanity of these families!
