We are with BT at the moment but moving into a brand new house on Wednesday, in the new house there is lines already fitted so will we have to pay to have BT moved to there from our old house?

regardless of whethere there is a physical line present or not, if the new-line connection requires an engineer visit, BT will charge you 115+vat for it. They should advise you of any charge beforehand. If tjis is the case, just go with Madasafish (cheaper line-rental and calls as well), they will install the line for 49.99 if an engineer visit is required - www.madasafish.com/talk/new-line-installation.shtml - sorry for the lack of grammar, im posting on my mobile, hope that helps.

Yes, it's no problem (to clarify I have been using madasafish with o2 bb for neaarly a years now). Madasafish are actually owned by Brightview Internet Services (who also own Plusnet), who are in turn a subsidury of the BT Group lol. They are in direct competition with BT Retail however, and ive never had any problems with them had murder with BT. Only use my line for bb and 08 call's so the line-rental saving and the cheap as hell 08 calls is great. Only had to phone them once, they were okay, but use online support tickets when i want assistance and its quite a fast system. They don't advertise it but you get a free .co.uk domain name and webspace as well lol.

I'm not sure that BT will hand over the line to another supplier. I had to pay the £112 when I moved in here. Although the line was already installed they do that when the houses are being built but claim it back from the first resident.

BT don't have a choice im afraid, its competition laws. If the line is present, but not connected, then its not under anyones control as such.

Don't confuse BT Wholesale, who own the lines and network infastructure and Openreach, who maintain and connect the lines, with BT Retail (ie. the company you always see advertising their broadband and telephony services etc) - though they are all part of the BT Group, they are seperate entities and BT Retail are simply a provider just like Madasafish or Tiscali etc...

Unless BT Retail have the line in use, and a contracted end-customer, BT have no way of preventing you from going with whoever you want. If you get the line connected with Madasafish instead of BT Retail, it is still an Openreach engineer who does the reconnection for you, and they still lease the line off BT Wholesale to sell on to you, it's simply that they charge £49 for the engineer visit (if required) rather than the £115+vat that BT Retail charge for the same service.

Ouch... wishing you the best of luck with them. One tip "check your bill each month carefully to ensure they are not adding things that you did not ask for".
