Liverpool One jewellers Goldsmiths robbed by gunmen


GUN-TOTING robbers raided a Liverpool jewellers this morning right in front of terrified Christmas shoppers.

Goldsmiths, in the new Liverpool One retail complex, was hit by the hooded gang at around 10am this morning.

It is thought a crowbar or handle of some description may have been used to smash the front door and display window, where many of the high-valued items were on display.

Four men, all wearing dark clothing, jumped out of a black Golf-type car near Goldsmiths and began to batter the front door which was locked.

Once inside, they smashed cabinets containing jewellery before running off with their loot.

A security officer gave chase, but he was threatened with a gun by the gang and he was forced to stand back as the robbers fled.

Two of the raiders sprinted away between the Sony store and Joh Lewis, while a further two men escaped between Goldsmiths and John Lewis.

The car was discovered a short time later abandoned and burnt out on York Street, just a 60 second drive away.

It will now be forensically examined by detectives in the hunt for the gang.

This morning, glass was strewn all over the pavement outside and the shop on Paradise Street was closed while police spoke to stunned witnesses.

A number of staff were understood to be in the shop when the mob struck.

A man was injured during the incident, but he refused hospital treatment from the ambulance staff who attended.

Bypassers also spoke of the smell of burning, as the premises was cordoned off by police, due to the jeweller's security smoke screen.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "We are investigating at robbery at Goldsmiths at 10am this morning. Some sort of implement was used to smash through the front window.

"CCTV is being examined and we would appeal to anyone who has information about this incident to contact us."

The Goldsmiths jewellers describes itself as a 'luxurious showroom' selling designer brands like Rolex, Chanel and an extensive range of diamonds.
