Yes, a car battery is lead acid. For radios, as I remember, you used to have a little low voltage, 2 volt, lead acid accumulator, which could be re-charged, for the low tension side just for the valve heaters & a large dry battery for the high tension side which would have tappings for a range of voltages, anything from about 75 volts & up.
