This Milestone (I think its atchelly Iron not stone) is on Birkenhead road on what is now considered the border between Meols and Hoylake. It says Hoylake half a mile because back in 1896 Hoylake was just the area up where the roundabout now is. The rest of what is now Hoylake was called Meols apart from a small area by Trinity road which was called Hoose. What we now know as Meols was called 'Great Meols' and sometimes still is.

This is just a boring phone box on Greenwood road Meols but to OMD fans its a bit of a shrine. This was the phone box that the band sung about on one of their earliest songs called Red frame white light.

That might not seem that great but some hardcore fans make pilgrimages to it from around the country and even abroad.

If you don't believe me look at this thread from OMD forums. Its almost a shrine lol.

The number is still the same too

I'd seen this a couple of months ago but couldn't remember where. I went on a mission today and found it again and got a couple of photos. It's out near Raby Mere

The circle and triangle are red - just green with stuff off the trees!!! I was just about to drive off having taken the photo when I saw the man from the house in my rear view mirror watching me. I got out of the car to reassure him that I wasn't up to no good! He was really lovely and said that the bottom plate is the original but the top is a remake. Apparently there are some that argue that the triangle should be up the other way. The house used to be a brewery? I'll have a bit more of a nose round when I get a chance. I get the feeling there's quite a bit of history going on there.

Sorry, I foolishly assumed it was still in use. sorry
Yes, the top is wrong way up and I can see it is cut from steel sheet or similar, whereas the real thing was durable cast iron.

Do those iron railings with the curved top still exist out on the country roads of the Wirral? They were sometimes painted black and white, black uprights and white bars, and I seem to remember them at the Clatterbridge-Thornton Hough crossroads. So neat and safe when cars had dim headlamps, not necessary nowadays!

As a member of the OMD forum (same username) I can say I know most of those people in the pictures!!

All together now...."Red Frame White Light, telephone box, red on grey"

In fact my website domain name is named after their 1993 album 'liberator' and I produce OMD vids for YouTube!.

Now ya know!

Ha ha wow its a small world. I found that thread on that forum a few months ago whilst I was bored trawling the outer reaches of the web. I never thought people would be intrested in the phone box.
I grew up in Meols but the nearest connection I can make to OMD is being Pete Humphreys's nephews mate. His mum and dad (Petes brother) used to run the fan club from his house in Drummond road Hoylake.

I remember those well, exactly where you say & elsewhere too; I'm sure there's some still around: picture someone? It's at times like this I wish I were closer.
