Man 'strangles dog' after attack

A man appeared to strangle his dog after it attacked a four-year-old boy in a Birmingham park.

The owner was walking the dog, described as a brown pit bull type, in Washwood Heath Park without a lead.

The man, described as Asian, about 5ft 10in (1.77m) and in his mid 30s, appeared to kill the dog in front of passers-by, police said.

The boy was treated at hospital after suffering small wounds to the head in the incident on 26 September.

'Not controlled'

West Midlands Police issued CCTV footage of the man leaving the park dragging the apparently dead dog and appealed for witnesses to the killing.

Earlier the animal had approached a group of young children playing and attacked the boy before running back to its owner.

He then appeared to strangle the dog and tried to put it into a bin bag before leaving the park shortly after 1915 BST, police said.

The boy was treated at hospital but discharged the same night.

Sgt Alan Hands, from Nechells Green police station, described it as a "horrific" incident.

He said: "It was terrifying for the little boy who was attacked and bitten by this dog which was not properly controlled on a lead.

"When it returned to the owner he appeared to destroy the dog with no regard for those who witnessed his actions or the animal itself without checking to see if the child was hurt.

"He is clearly not a responsible pet owner in any regard."

The owner was dressed in a cream-coloured hooded jumper and blue jeans.

Well, clearly he has no regard for anyone elses safety...and more than likely simply had the dog as a status symbol...

But end of the day, the dog attacked a child. What is he going to do, pet it and give it a treat?

The dog would have been destroyed hopefully anyway.

Pit bulls and other types of dog should be banned 100%
Whats wrong with Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Border Collies etc etc

I appreciate what you are saying Craig but of course the dog should of been on a lead. The owner of the dog has to be held account for his actions.

If that guy can strangle a dog in anger I would hate to see what happens if hes angry against a human being. Very worrying.

Im disgusted. Years ago, my son was winding the dog up something chronic. The inevitable happened + the lad got bit. I know the circs. are diff in that this dog attaked a stranger but me point is, i was beside meself about the dog as well as the antagonistic kid.
The owner does not appear to have any love for the dog atall! I dont understand this atall.

I'm guessing it may not have been his dog, maybe walking it for someone else? After all, how do you prove it was his?

What a turd.

I wanna know what was going on in his head??

Was he thinking of himself? The kid? The dog? No-one? Everyone?- in a warped, deluded way.
Surely someone in brummy knows of someone who had a dog+ now dusent?!
Personally, id kick him in the families....

One dangerous dog less, where is the problem? How many people have to be killed and/or maimed?

We don't allow people to wander around the streets with dangerous animals like lions and tigers, why are we so protective about dangerous dogs?

I have no problem whatsoever of a dangerous dog or any animal for that matter being put down, if the need arises. It should be done by a vet in a civilised manner. Whether its agreed with or not, animals in this country have rights under the law and we can not allow a free for all when someone thinks an animal should be put down.

God help us,
Come yourself,
Don't send Jesus,
This is no place for children.

Well if he's got a restaurant he's not going to leave a dead dog for the dustmen is he, simple economics.
