The car turned up at a scrap yard south of London. It has 36,494 miles on the clock and is in fine condition given it was sold more than five decades ago.

When we turned up to have a look at the Minor it started first time and ticked over happily.

It has obviously been well looked-after - it has fresh tyres and a new exhaust. But it will only be going as far as the crusher around the corner.

Scrapyard owner Geoff Bridges said: "I understand the point of the scrappage scheme but sometimes the wrong cars are being traded in.

"This is not just some clapped-out old banger."

This government has a lot to answer for with this farcicle scheme, wasting hundreds of millions of public money, to line the pockets of Korean car manufacturers and greedy good-for-nothing dealerships, just so they can pretend to be green, and in the process ridding the country of an already dwindling breed of classic cars...

Would I drive one myself? No. But do I think classics like this, in such good condition, should be scrapped? No way!

There should be ban on anything pre-1973 being scrapped under the scheme imho!

51 fkin years old, the tin-can turd they churn out nowadays will be lucky to last half that!!

Possibly, but thats not the point tbh. There have been loads of classics that are worth more than £2,000 being scrapped, because people are stupid, and like Korean tin cans!

Classic cars in such good condition, should be saved regardless of their value imho, and the government ought to be ashamed of themselves.

It just not allowed back on the road - you could race it.

There is a championship in the Classic Touring cars for these - something like "Post Historics" - they time them with a calendar raftl

Thats probably no less economical or expensive to run then most modern cars, and probably doesnt make much more CO2. Take into account the lifespan of this car, and the amount of CO2 required to destroy it and create a new car and it just goes to show really how thick the government is. If anything they should be pushing to keep old cars on the road.

I HATE cars.

I collect Morris Minors, have 9 of them, mainly Travellers. A good roadworthy saloon like this is worth about £2,000-£2,500 on the road. The prick who scrapped it needs shafting!!
As fore economy, mid 30`s, low emissions on a correctly tuned engine, CHEAP parts and excellent backup sevice, NO diagnostics to fook you up, more of a head turner than the shite euroboxes on the roads today, and FREE tax!!

If that car is worth more than £2k then surely its the stupid owners fault, and not the fault of the scrappage scheme. Ill edge a bet it was one of the blue rinse brigade who keep it garaged all week and only uses it to get a pension, and thinks £2k is a lot of money against a far eastern 850cc tin can.

Personally though, Id rather have the option than not - youre not forced in to PX'ing your old car for it to get scrapped you know... [Linked Image]

The stupid thing about the scrappage scheme is that if you were to buy a brand new car (like the ones available under the scrappage scheme) If you part ex your old car (even if it is an old banger) and haggle with the dealer - you can get around £2k off anyway... and then someone who doesn't have much money can buy your old one for around £400.
It's stupid to scrap something that still works... but we are living in a throw away world frown

Youre missing the point - noone is forcing anyone to scrap their car.

If you wanted, you are well within your rights to sell your car for £400 and then haggle £1600 off the dealer to make the £2k

Works well if you have a total banger thats worth sweet FA, if your car is perfectly reasonable then its your own stupid fault for not looking in to it first.

If I had a banger, just about to run out of MOT with little chance of a pass, itd be very nice to know I could walk in to a dealer and its worth £2k with no hassle of haggling....

Im also not stupid enough to walk in with my BMW and get £2k scrap for it against a new car... [Linked Image]

I see what you're saying Beaker! The part of the scrappage scheme that I don't like is the fact they are scrapped even if they are a perfectly good car.
It should be called 'The part ex but we'll scrap only if need be scheme' ... wink

Quote
"I turned a jaundiced eye toward the Cash For Clunkers program when I first heard of it. It seemed like just another bit of progressive feel-good theater designed to make the ecomaniacs feel splendid about themselves. That being, of course, the entire raison d'etre of a progressive in the first place. I assumed the barriers to entry for this enterprise, the red tape and myriad of if/thens, would make the program just another liberal circle jerk. Cheap vaudeville for the True Believers.

Therefore I was surprised when I read that no only was the program hugely successful in enticing folks to buy new fuel efficient cars, but it was so goddamn successful they'd run out of the first billion dollars of taxpayer money and needed an infusion of another 2 billion. All the while killing/unkilling the program as "too fooking successful," to quote the administration's Demolition Derby Czar.

Two things about this program drive me absolutely insane: first, anyone who can afford payments on a new vehicle doesn't need my fooking tax dollars to make that happen. $4500 rebate for your clunker? Better be prepared to pay sticker price less $4500 for that new vehicle, sucker. And anyone who can't beat a salesman down $4500 on a new car without a trade in is a fooking moron.

Second, and most egregious, is the fact that these "clunkers" are being willfully destroyed to prevent their use forevermore with a lethal dose of sodium silicate.

You poor people who voted for Obama? He just fooked you again. Poor people can't afford $500 car payments even with a $4500 taxpayer bailout. All those "clunkers"? They were traditionally immediately auctioned into the bottom rungs of the used car market. High school and college kids looking for a first car? Poor folk who can only afford a $500 to $1500 car, where the dealer carries the paper and you pay him weekly because your credit resembles that of the Weimar Republic circa 1922? You're boned, Patsy.

It's just like the old trope of burning a village to save it. (I really despise the assholes who perpetrated My Lai. Not only for what they did, but for giving the Left 40 years worth of ammunition, during which they endlessly and breathlessly proclaimed that that was all we ever did in Vietnam. Besides bayoneting babies and raping women, of course).

A government that purposefully destroys perfectly serviceable consumer goods, inexpensive goods that most benefit the poorest and most desperate members of society, is a government gone so fooking mad it makes the ravings of tertiary syphilis look wholesome in comparison.

This singular act belies any affectation of good faith, compassion, or humanity this craven and diabolical regime presumes. Barack Obama would rather have poor people beggar a damn ride to work, or walk holes in their shoes, than drive an affordable vehicle that does not meet his arbitrary and capricious definition of environmental friendliness.

I work in a county full of poor country sods, black and white. Almost to a person they drive "clunkers". And there is a reason they drive pickup trucks from the sixties, seventies, eighties. And it's not for ironic reasons, or because they enjoy driving a "classic". It's because they bought that truck when they were 25 years old, and have babied it their entire lives and they never want to buy another vehicle, unless it's to buy mama a Buick when she's 65 to drive to the Publix and the hairdresser once a week. These poor barstard just had a goodly amount of the affordable vehicle market yanked out from under their feet by a megalomaniacal prick.

I suppose King Barack I wants them to ride public transportation. Well, they don't have fooking buses in the country, or the small towns. That's an urban construct designed to help enslave the city proles. Hamlet proles need a cheap car, you miserable wretches.

My indifference to this contemptible barstard has grown to concern, to disgust, to loathing. He isn't fit to carry a house framer's tool belt. He is a fraud, a despicable fraud, who would build his empire upon the bones of the weakest, most vulnerable segment of society as he engineers us into the ditch.

I cannot wait to vote againt this son of a bitch again".
