Anyone who watches "Tonight with Trevor Macdonald" will know what im on about...

As im not fat, in fact in a recent consultation and examination with a heart specialist in Arrowe Park, I was found to have a BMI of 21 (which has been the case for the past 5 years) and was told my the results of all tests including an ECG, blood pressure, heart rate etc, all indicated an extremely athletic and healthy lifestyle (yeah right, if you ever wanted proof that these tests are crap, there it is - though I must admit, I can still walk up a mountain or run 6 miles with no pre-warning if you ask me too so maybe there is something in it - but that isnt an indication of my lifestyle, or my eating habits, which anyone who know's me will agree, are outrageously unhealthy), I want to know...

Will I get £425 for not being FAT?

I mean lets face it, the excuse the government is touting as a reason for paying FAT people to lose weight, is because they cost the NHS etc, a LOT more money than a personn who isnt fat.

Since I am therefore apparently saving the NHS a LOT of money by apparently keeping fit and healthy, why should'nt I get the £425?

It pi$$es me off that just because someone is fat, they are going to get paid to lose weight, yet the people who arnt causing a problem, recieve nothing; and then what will the fat people do? Yep, exactly what you'd expect, as the programme showed, they will go and spend their hard earned fat cash on guess what - getting themselves fat again (and then probably enroll on another fat-pay course).

It always the way with this government, the savers, the people who have kept the economy and the banks solvent, are the ones being punished for the wrecklessness and stupidity of others, and now the government intend to pay the fat people (which means more tax for EVERYONE) for causing the obesity epidemic, whilst the people who are innocent in all this, are once again, the losers.

Yeah, I thought that was a waste of money too, it said the booklet (didnt say if it included the measuring tape though) cost 14p to produce, there is tens of thousands of homes on Wirral, that's a waste of money imho.

Booklets are better served (barring booklets for things like swine flu etc) being located at libraries, GP surgeries, hostpials etc, where they are usually picked up by people who want to read them.

I had a scan through and have since thrown it away, can't remember what happened to the measuring tape haha!

I think it you want to lose weight its possibly a bit like giving up smoking. You have to want to. It takes will power and self-control.

Thing is, its not enough just lowering your calorie intake. Its about changing your whole lifestyle. Its about getting regular exercise. Half the people I've spoken to who regularly waste time and money on Weightwatchers/Slimming World etc don't bother to exercise. They just reduce their food intake for a few weeks and see a difference. But then start eating more again and *surprise surprise* they put the weight back on.

I know people will ask 'And what would you know about being fat?' I have never been obese. But I've been overweight following pregnancies. But it is possible to lose it again, if you find the motivation and self-control. I'm walking proof.

They use any excuse for being fat, usually blaming everyone or everything else and not themselves, and then want to do as little as possible to lose weight when they have to (hence the reason for diets like the Atkins diet becoming so widespread and famed etc).

They all want to be able to pop a pill and all the weight is gone, and that is precisely the reason most fat people are fat, laziness, unwillingness to help themselves, and a lack of resistance to temptation.

It is out of order, that whilst CANCER patients are continuously depraved of potentially life-saving/extending drugs due to cost concerns, FAT people can get allsorts on the NHS, including gatstric bands, complex cosmetic surgery after weight loss, and now actual cash as an incentive to lose weight.

As studies in the US have proved and indeed "Tonights" own experiment, if someone needs financial incentive to lose weight, they will put it back on he minute the incentive is removed, it's the people who have genuine willingness and aspirations to lose weight that will do so, and they will do it WITHOUT needing medical procedures etc wasting time and money for the NHS, that could be much better spent with genuine patients who are suffering genuine non-self-inflicted/over-indulgent health problems.

The guy who developed the concept has himself, stated he is shocked that the UK government is even considering it, after what has happened in his own US studies.

I might become fat if this is launched widespread across the UK, £425 will do nicely!!

I know a better incentive, TAX THE FAT!! Give them all two years to get down to "acceptable" sizes and weights, or they are taxed higher for each lb of weight - they cost the NHS more, so why not? Besides, less money for food, means less fat... And nobody wants to pay higher taxes than they have to!

It works both ways imho!

well said steve as you all now im overwieght myself and to be honest it is a hard long up hill struggle to loose the weight and acheive the desired body that allows you to fit back in to sociaty but yet the hardest part is keeping the weight off once ya loose it.

most overweight people are embarrassed about the way they are and look cos of all the bad publicity Obesity gets not only off the press but off of peer pressure and not excludin the tv wid the Celebraties and models.

i truely belive that every overweight person does think about loosin weight on a regular basis but as clothing retailers not bein able to cope wid the larger sizes we then ave to go and shop in certain shops on the high street which is also another knock back in confidence as its like singlin them out from the normal folk.

yes it would be nice to go in to JJB or TJ HUGHES and by clothes off the shelf and yes it would be nice to go to top brand clothing stores and by nice clothes, but as i am lets say one of our larger friends in life this is not the case which is not down to anyone apart from myself, It would be nice if these retailers could cater for the larger population and instead of makin them feel like a minority in life let them feel part of sociaity and part of the brittish population on a whole.

But then if a person is happy about the way they are, the way they live, the way they eat then wots the fuss about.

Lets start off by saying, 100% of thin people die, 100% of non smokers die, 100% of non drinkers die and so on and so on. Not necessary in old age. Worry will get you an early grave and disrupt and make your life miserable. I agree money should not be used to induce people to lose wait, give up smoking and knock the drink in the head but neither should we have to pay massive amounts of money for medicines and drugs to these drug company's that make Billions in profit every year. The drug company's should be run by the people for the people and be under government and NHS control as a non profit making organisation. Every drug company world wide should be government controlled and that way you might get the drugs released when there needed and not when the market dictates. In my view there are developed drug treatments held back at all times because drug company's have to retrieve their money on previous drugs developed which then leaves people not getting the best available. Peoples health and capitalism shouldn't mix.

I think the point being made is that certain 'health risks' are costing the NHS a lot of money.

Who pays for the NHS? Every person that pays tax and national insurance.

I think this should mean that we all have a responsibility, not just to our country but to ourselves, to look after yourself.

If that means losing weight, giving up smoking, cutting down alcohol intake, stopping intake of other substances considered harmful to your body, then let's get on with it. You only get one chance at life. Procrastination, as they say, is the thief of time. Its never too early or late to change your life.

But at the end of the day only you can make the change. For every decision in life there is a right and a not so right. We learn from an early age what is right and what is wrong. I don't think anyone can say in this day and age that they don't know what is harmful or what is good for them.

Respect yourself, love yourself, believe in yourself. Forget what others have judged you to be. Be the person you want to be. But also think about the impact that may have on others.

Motivational talk over.

I agree 110% with that!! clap Until you love yourself and respect yourself, you can't expect others to love and respect you.

I'm not built for speed, I'm built for comfort, but I will admit that I use my weight as protection. Nobody ever "fancies" the fat bird ergo I'll stay single and won't get hurt again. BUT I was also diagnosed as having an underactive thyroid and am now on tablets for life for it. This means I'm already at a greater disadvantage from someone who just overeats. My diet is not what I'd consider unhealthy. I very rarely eat fried foods (when I do it's only at a meet raftl ), even in the winter I eat a lot of salads, I don't eat much red meat, I eat wholemeal pasta, rice and bread, I don't put salt in or on my food, have very little sugar, rarely eat chocolate, crisps etc, I occasionally have a drink, I have my 2 litres of water every day, I try to have my "5 a day". My problem is, I don't do enough exercise, even though I walk the dog for at least an hour a day, and I love cheese!! raftl

This is changing in the very near future but not because of £425 (although that would come in EXTREMELY handy right now!! I'M changing my life and lifestyle because I want to, and that, I believe, is the difference.

It's taken other parts of my life to fall into place and certain people to come into my life to give me the motivation I need.

In the words of the late, great Freddie - Don't stop me now, I'm having such a good time, I'm having a ball!!
