Murdered woman's unborn baby dies

The unborn baby of a pregnant woman killed in a "completely random" street attack also died in the incident, police have confirmed.

The woman, who has not been named but who was in her early 20s, was stabbed in the back on Pasture Street, Grimsby, just before 1600 BST on Sunday.

Humberside Police said she was attacked by a man she did not know, who had been following her.

A 53-year-old man arrested over the incident remains in police custody.

The woman, who was from Grimsby, was walking to work when she was attacked.

'Tragic incident'

She was taken to the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital but died from her injuries.

Friends of the woman said she was seven months pregnant with what would have been her first baby.

Dave Stembridge, 18, said: "She just didn't deserve it. She was one of the greatest people anyone would want to meet.

"She was just amazing. She's going to be missed so much. It's just not fair."

Det Supt Christine Kelk said it was a "completely random" attack.

She said: "[The victim] appears to have been followed... and she was stabbed and fell to the floor.

"A member of the public went to her assistance and also assisted in apprehending the man that we have in custody."

Det Supt Kelk said it was a "tragic incident".

"It is quite possible that a number of people in the town centre around the time of the incident may have seen the suspect as he walked to [the scene]," she continued.

"I would ask that these people come forward urgently as any information, no matter how small it may seem, may be vital to the investigation."

A number of floral tributes have been left at the scene, which has been examined by forensic officers.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place later.

Charge over mother-to-be killing

A man has been charged with the murder of a heavily-pregnant woman who was killed in the street while on her way to work.

Pizza Hut worker Claire Wilson, 21, was stabbed in the back on Pasture Street, Grimsby, on Sunday afternoon.

Alan McMullan, 53, will appear at Grimsby magistrates' court on Tuesday charged with Ms Wilson's murder.

Ms Wilson, who lived in Grimsby, was seven months pregnant. Her unborn child also died in the attack.

Police repeated their appeal for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Throughout Monday a stream of wellwishers and friends visited the scene, leaving cards, flowers and toys.

Among them was Ms Wilson's partner, Adam Kennard, 23, who spent almost half an hour at the scene with a group of 25 family members and friends.

He left a number of items at the growing shrine to his partner, including a Baby Girl balloon.

Other members of his group left flowers, messages, pictures and candles.

One card was left with a pair of red baby shoes.

It read: "Baby April. You would have been the most loved baby in the world.

"Take care of your mum for us."
