I'm not aware that I've done anything but the colour on my laptop screen seems to be much darker than it - any idea if it's on it's way out or suggestions as to how to put it right? I've look at the control panel / display / settings. Its on 1280x800 screen resolution and high quality colour - as far as I'm aware it's always been on that setting. Thanks for any help offered

Deadmau - it doesn't sound silly.Yes it is plugged in but that is exactly how it looks. DD F7 is > and F8 is <. It's on as right as it will go

Yes the brightness increases and decreases with the F7/F8 keys but the brightest setting isn't particularly bright! Laptop is E-System (PC World) 3089 UK running XP (if that makes a difference)

There is often an advanced tab within display properties, where you can set the colour levels individually as well as the gamma etc..

If you can see the screen, it won't have "gone"... if does dim over time, but were talking over a period of years, they tend to last for a good 5 - 8 years before they actually die, and even then it is usually the inverter that gives up, which is an easy fix.
The CCFL itself rarely dies, and as I say, if you can see the screen, it wont be dead (ie. without having to look at it under light).
