Blending V6 power with vast luggage area, Vauxhall unleashes fastest-ever carrier

[Linked Image]

Get a load of Vauxhall’s fastest-ever estate. The firm has released the first official pictures of its Insignia VXR Sports Tourer.

It joins the hatch and saloon to complete the flagship range, and the deeper bumpers, large mesh front grille, matt-finished chrome exhaust pipes and VXR badges make it easy to identify.

The newcomer also rides 10mm lower than the standard car on 19-inch alloys, features Brembo brakes and gets an adaptive 4WD system and a limited slip differential.

Inside are Recaro race seats, as well as a VXR steering wheel and gearknob. The car delivers on all this promise, too. Under the bonnet is a 2.8-litre turbo V6. This 320bhp unit propels the Insignia from 0-62mph in six seconds, on the way to a top speed of 155mph.

The suspension is stiffer than that of the standard car, while engineers have covered in excess of 6,000 miles during testing at Germany’s gruelling Nürburgring race track to ensure supreme handling ability.

Practicality hasn’t been compromised in the pursuit of performance, though. The 540-litre boot can be expanded to a huge 1,530 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

This blend of flexibility and pace has left bosses confident that the newcomer will tempt buyers of more expensive rivals such as the BMW 335i Touring and Audi S4 Avant. Prices will be announced in the summer, but buyers can expect to pay around £25,000 for the VXR Sports Tourer when it arrives towards the end of the year.

...agreed - it should have a big "Value" sticker on the back...

You may get decent performance, but the build quality is always going to suck compared to the germans.

25 grand though. 25 grand. I dont think its aimed at the RS4 or M3, or even the AMG's. Its aimed at the S4 V8 not the RS4, and the 335i not the M3. Even then, its still a good 10 to 15 grand cheaper. And i dont reckon youll get 10 to 15 grands worth less car.

Either way, itll make an awesome tow car secondhand in 10 years time.

I heard a story that the stability control fuse was removed from the top gear car to make it drive that bad.

Plus Clarkson was being an Idiot. Take any Fwd car with a bit of torque put it on full lock with an open diff and watch it do that.

But we all know how shit that chassis is. Vauxhall made it themself, and it turned out so bad they had to draught in Lotus to get just the basic spec ones to handle properly.

Removing the traction and stability just shows what the raw car is like underneth - anyone can use electronics to make a car behave...

The Beemer has both, TC and Stability Control - you can drive that faster with them both turned off....

Oh yeah, you can drive most cars faster with them turned off. However that car needs them on to be safe. Its just Jeremy was overdoing it a bit there for show.

Those conditions arent specific for that car though. That much torque through a soft Fwd chassis and an open diff is never going ot handle properly if you drive it like that.
