Fears Conservatives could scrap Birkenhead Cammell Laird shipyard deal

FEARS the Conservatives could scrap a huge defence contract which Birkenhead shipyard Cammell Laird is in the running for emerged today.

The party admitted that should it win the next general election it would start a “strategic review” of Ministry of Defence spending as soon as possible.

In March the shipyard was named joint preferred bidder for work on two of the biggest Royal Navy vessels to be built for the £150m contract.

Cammell Laird and the Teesside yard of A&P are in final negotiations with the MoD to build the flight decks of the UK’s two Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.

A Conservative party spokeswoman said: “We would institute a strategic review of defence spending as soon as possible should we win the next general election.”
