Reason not to go to the zoo!!

A male chimpanzee in a Swedish zoo planned hundreds of stone-throwing attacks on zoo visitors, according to researchers.

Keepers at Furuvik Zoo found that the chimp collected and stored stones that he would later use as missiles.

Further, the chimp learned to recognise how and when parts of his concrete enclosure could be pulled apart to fashion further projectiles.

The findings are reported in the journal Current Biology.

There has been scant evidence in previous research that animals can plan for future events.

Animals born in captivity would probably last 5 minutes in the wild. Its not that simple to just let them all out. Some animals can only survive in zoos because they are hunted/poached in the wild into extinction. Zoos have also been instrumental in introducing breeds back into the wild.

I'm not a fan of zoos with tiny boring enclosures where the animals go nuts and end up throwing stones.

Hopefully Chester Zoos plans will improve habitation for wild animals they keep there.

Of course we would have to reintroduce them back to their natural habitat, but if they were not in captivity they wouldn't be born in captivity, and as for poaching, if we in the western world never bought animal products, ie skins etc there would be no market for the poachers. Most zoo's hide behind conservationism so they can make money out of exhibiting animals. If conservation was there only aim then there would only be a few animals in a zoo.

Granted, Back in victorian times zoo's were soley for the entertainment of us humans, which has created the problems that we see today, with poaching and game hunting, therefore in the modern day we need Zoo's and Animal parks such as Chester Zoo and South Lakes Wild animal park, to raise awareness and funds for the animals in the wild.

unfortunatly not all endangered animals are interesting enough for joe bloggs, and therefore, crowd pleaser Animals also need to be exhibited, Animals such as Zebra's, Girafee and Sealions will attract visitors, visitors pay the entrance fee, entrance fee goes towards conservation for endangered and threatened animals. But the way things are going these crowd pleasers will become endangered themselves and atleast we will have a good captive population with good blood lines that a re-introduction into the wild could be a possibility, but until we sort out the poaching problems, Re-introductions are useless, and were do you propose we get the money from to fund the park rangers and the legal battles to control the poachers.

I feel that bad zoo's with poor standards with the wrong objectives and mission give the whole zoo world a bad name. But the Major Zoo's in this country, infact the world, are legit when they say its all in the name of conservation, 1 way or another.

Why is it when a species is becoming extinct we feel we have to lock up the remaining few in a zoo and call it conservation, knowing full well there has never been a major reintroduction of a species back into its natural habitat. I understand that natural habitats are often removed by mans quest for more and more land etc, so whats the point of conserving a species if there no where to introduce them back to. Again they stay locked up for mans pleasure. The poaching problem is again something that the wealthy societies of this world do nothing to deter, apart from not buying the poached goods, help should be given to the parts of the world where poaching mainly takes place, after all the majority of poaching is done to help feed families. There is plenty of money in this world to combat poaching, illegal trade of animal products and for conservation of animals in there own habitat but unfortunately it is far to low on any list for consideration. If the same amount of money was spent on animal conversation as whats being spent on holding the Olympics in this or any other country for a few weeks then there wouldn't be a problem in conservation of animals in there own habitat. When people get there priorities right something could be done.
