Water firm fined over sewage

Water firm United Utilities has been fined £10,000 after admitting allowing untreated sewage to overflow into a brook in the Ribble Valley.
A collapsed sewer led to the discharge at Bushburn Brook in Langho in March last year, Hyndburn magistrates were told on Wednesday.

The incident was reported to the Environment Agency by a member of the public out walking.

Shaun Robinson, from United Utilities, said: "We apologised to the court for the incident and for any impact on the local environment, and for taking up valuable court time.

"The incident was down to a collapsed sewer. We assisted the Environment Agency with their inquiries, and have since put in place new monitoring equipment to prevent a reoccurrence."

The Warrington-based company pleaded guilty to the unauthorised discharge and was also ordered to pay £1,524 court costs.
