A masked gang of robbers set fire to a getaway car and hijacked other vehicles after they raided a Merseyside jewellery shop, police said.

They used crowbars to smash cabinets at Christopher James on Mathew Street at about 1600 GMT on Tuesday.

A grey Vauxhall Vectra, which was used for the getaway, was later found burnt out on Cumberland Street in Liverpool.

Two other vehicles were also hijacked by a gang of four men shortly after the raid, police said.

They received reports that a motorist had been dragged out of his van by four men in balaclavas on Fernhill Road about ten minutes after the gang made off in the Vauxhall Vectra.

They then cut in front of a black Mondeo on Hawthorne Road and dragged the driver out of that car and drove off.

The jewellery shop security guard was left with minor injuries.

All the vehicles have now been recovered but police are urging any witnesses to contact them.
