Hi, I am trying to find out the history of my Grandparents old home. The address was 168 Conway Street, Birkenhead ( at the junction with park street). My Grandfather was a stonemason and ran his business from these premises and had a showroom on the front selling headstones. There were 2 sandstone gateposts at the side of the showroom which led to the house. On one gatepost the word CONWAY was carved and on the other was the word COTTAGE. From what I have been told I am led to believe that Conway Street was at one time the driveway to the house and it stretched down to Birkenhead Park, but do not know any more than that. Does anybody know where to start looking for information please?

Hi Philip - probably best to start with Census records: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/ You will probably have to pay to see info, or you could try access from http://www.ancestry.co.uk/, they do a 14 day free trial, useful for scooping up all manner of useful information.
I looked at the tithe maps and that section is missing (very annoying when that happens). On http://www.old-maps.co.uk Conway Cottage appears to be a property on Park Street - near to the corner. Maybe the square of land on the corner was part of the property - maybe where the stones were on show.
