BIG-HEARTED bikers braved freezing temperatures at the weekend to take part in a Santa Run - raising cash and collecting presents for children at Wirral hospitals.
Mayor and Mayoress of Wirral, Cllr Adrian Jones and his wife Chris, were at Arrowe Park to formally receive the many hundreds of Christmas presents that the Wirral motorcyclist fraternity collected for kids.
In all, there were seven tables of toys delivered by 283 bikers - many with pillion passengers - who braved the frost to set off at 11am from New Brighton for a scenic ride to the hospital.
Their destination was the hospital’s restaurant which was soon sardine-packed with men and women in frost proof leathers and helmets.
Wirral’s Mayor Cllr Jones said: “It was a privilege to be invited to receive the vast number of presents the bikers brought to the hospital.
“With almost 300 motor-cyclists arriving, some laden with a few toys and some with bulging sacks, I was astounded at the extent of their generosity. This is the Christmas spirit at its very best.
"Wirral must be proud of our biker fraternity for the great charity work they do every year. Most of us have heard of the famous Egg Run but this less well known event is also enormously heart warming for the kindness shown to sick children.”
Organiser Matt Rose said: “It was a great day. All the riders were warmed with hot beverages and a mince pie. Some of the children joined in the festivities, trying to identify possibly the real Santa. And Tesco in Heswall, and Asda in Woodchurch, donated toys delivered on their behalf by the bikers. We also stopped at Sainsbury’s in Upton to collect a large quantity of selection boxes donated by them with the aid of some hardwork from the army cadets. In addition to a most successful day, £1,384 was raised through donations and merchandise sales for the Wirral Egg Run Charity.
“The ride-out passed off without incident. All traffic was kept moving with little or no disruption.”
