It belonged to a contractor working for the Driving Standards Agency, the transport secretary told MPs.

It is the latest in a series of data losses since HM Revenue and Customs lost discs with 25m people's details.

Ms Kelly said the details of learner drivers had been formatted specifically for the contractor, Pearson Driving Assessments Ltd, and was not "readily usable or accessible" by third parties.

Risks 'not substantial'

She said the details were not sent in the post - but the hard drive had not been found where it had been expected to be, in the "secure facility" in Iowa.

She said the information commission had judged the risks presented by the loss were not "substantial" and there was no need to notify each person individually.

The details did not include bank account details, National Insurance numbers, driving licence numbers or dates of birth, she said.

This is a quote from another forum about this topic......

"this learner driver issue happened 10 months ago in america, it just took a while for us (and mps) to find out about it."

So you probs would have had a letter by now, ill be on that list aswell lol.

the BBC says there is a dedicated advice line for anyone concerned.

Won't be happy if I get dodgy phone calls, letters or emails!!

mmmmmmmmmm i dont evan want to know why these details was in america it scares the livin daylights outta me that people can be so careless wen it comes to things like this look at a while ago wen all the CSA details went missing its just gettin unreal.

People need to start bein more carefull and rememberin wot is happenin to these important details wen they go from department to department iv herd of things goin missin in internal mail but come on these are important and vital details it cant be right and i bet no one gets punished either which is wrong
