Britain's most senior traffic policeman is to be prosecuted for speeding, his force said on Tuesday.

Meredydd Hughes, head of roads policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), was allegedly caught driving at 90mph in a 60mph zone in North Wales while on holiday last May.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: "Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes has received a notice of prosecution in respect of an alleged driving offence in North Wales in the early morning of a bank holiday Monday in May while on holiday.

"No summons has yet been received."

The force has not given any indication whether Mr Hughes intends to fight the prosecution.

North Wales Police said it would not confirm any details on a case before it went to court.

Whilst I will agree, a lot of people do speeds like that, especially on "faster roads" and it may not have been particuarly dangerous dependent on what the conditions were like etc, I think police officer's, especially higher up ones, should be setting an example and I hope that he gets the maximum penalty possible for his actions.

The laws the law at the end of the day and the police are there not only to enforce it, but one would also like to think they promote it and set a good example to other people even when not in uniform/on duty.

far from it...joe public arent in a postion whereby a) they have it annnounced to the world that they are being "investigated" for speeding...
b) he could also possibly get done under police conduct rules....so in effect its a double whammy!

BUT there might be a few flaws...obviously we havent the full facts .. but if it happened in may the Force is obliged to serve the Notice of Intended prosecution within 14 days of the offence on the driver (there are few exceptions such as company car drivers etc)
AND a summons would have to be raised wthin 6 months of the offence....may-nov? 6 months...hmmm
so if he is summonsed for the offence there could be legitimate defences he may use...as could any member of the public...
nothing to do with his postion/job.

Just thought it may amuse!

Yes, but the summons was apparently issued in October, within the 6 months. The case doesn't have to be heard within 6 months.

Yes, the article seems to contradict itself. In one place it says "no summons has yet been received" & in another paragraph "summoned to appear at Wrexham on 21st. November"
