An 11-year-boy has died after being shot in the neck in the Croxteth area of Liverpool, police said.

The incident happened shortly after 1930 BST in the car park of the Fir Tree public house on Fir Tree Drive.

Police said the victim was with two other boys when someone rode past on a bicycle and fired three shots, one of which hit the boy.

He was rushed to Alder Hey Hospital but police later confirmed that he had died.

Officers are at the scene and police are treating the shooting as a major incident. No-one has yet been arrested in connection with the shooting.

'Gangs of youths'

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said: "We treated an 11-year-old with serious gunshot wounds."

He added a bullet had hit the boy in his neck leaving him in a critical condition.

The boy was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

I was listening to James Whale on TalkSport last night and he had a caller (a taxi driver) from the area on, and the guy said its being going on for ages, its a gang battle between Croxteth and Norris Green apparently.

Obviously he doesnt know why anyone would scoop to such a low level, but apparently one of the leaders of one of the gangs (I think it was the Norris Green gang), who is only 17 I may add, was shot last year, and the lad who is the main suspect is only 14 years old.

James had to stop him there though because he said it was still in the process of legal action etc...

Was interesting to hear him speaking though, he said the police have an order whereby they can split up congregating gangs of youths in the area, but half an hour later they have just joined up again around the corner.

Sounds like its pretty bad over there.

A family friend said Rhys spent his last moments with his mother, who raced to the scene when told of the shooting.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it was a "heinous crime that shocked the whole of the country".

The BBC's Nick Ravenscroft said police were expecting to make more arrests, either later in the day or during the week.

few lads in work live near the scene, they say the news has hyped it up alot (can see why as a young KID being killed)

the turf war has been going on along time, on gang mamber was shot dead as he left a young offenders institute. an everton player who lives in bebington had his car robbed by one of the gangs (don't know what 1 tho) and was shown on youtube being hammered around a dirt carpark.

RIP Rhys

They paid a massive tribute to him tonight at Anfield before the Liverpool game against Toulouse in the Champions League.

They played the Everton anthem of Z-Cars before the match, probably the first time its ever been played inside Anfield. The family said it would have made Rhys laugh to hear the Everton anthem being played inside Anfield.

There were some words said by the stadium PA guy, and then there was a minute of applause in similar fashion to the tribute paid at Goodison Park the other day, in line with what Rhys' family wanted.

The family where also present throught the tribute, in the Everton shirts.
