because of this little change many people didn't regard it as a new model.

who cares anyway, fords are shite. if they were any good, i'd be out of a job.

imho a small change such as lights, bumper style etc doesnt mean that it is a new Mk only that it is a new series of the current Mk.

Vauxhalls usually have a mid life facelift, where the bumpers, lights, wing mirrors, spoilers etc of the current model are revised to produce a fresher version of the current model but the Mk doesnt change

i.e, both are the Vectra C

Yeah, it did my head in when people used to call the Mk2 Phase2 Clio the Mk3.

It eventually stopped upon the release of the proper Mk3, but people dont seem to understand the difference between a change of format/chassis and a facelift.

Funny one this, and kinda depends where you look, all the parts people refer to the last escorts at the Mk7, though Ford enthusiasts think of them as 6a/b think

Its 6 of one and 1/2 a dozen of the other, and your both right in your own respective way.

The only way to officially prove mk6b / 7 is to find an official Ford Brochure / statement.... smile

Offically, according to Ford, it will be listed as the Mk5, as the Mk4 that the fans call the Mk4 isnt really the Mk4, just a facelifted Mk3.

The nearest I can find to proof of the Mk's is a Channel 4 Motoring feature (which I would believe ahead of any "fans" website), the Ford website doesnt seem very proud of its history or the Escort (mind you I wouldnt be proud of the Escort if I were ford, id be pushing the Focus and pretending the Escort never existed lol).

http://www.channel4.com/4car/ft/feature/retrospective/1686/

Channel 4 rekon there were only 5 official Marks, although the Mk5 isnt listed as such. Given there is usually half a decade or so between the release of each new Mk of model, I would say the Channel 4 listing looks pretty legit.

But arnt the model numbers sometimes listed incorrectly with things like that even??

I have seen a so called "official" part supplier for renault list the Mk2 Ph2 Clio as the Mk3, before the Mk3 was even announced/launched for instance.

AFAIK there are 7 generations of escort in the Uk.
1-2-3-4-5-5b-6
never heard of the 4 not being called a 4 tho.

the mk5b gets called the 6 by stupid parts manufacturers who dont research the car they cater for,and obv said companies call the 6 a 7. i think the 5b may have been an interim to help boost sales while the 6 was being developed, but i dont know. All i know is it's 5b then 6
