when i start my car up in the morning ther is a very loud knocking noise in the engine, when its idle. as the revs get higher the knocking becomes more noticable. i have no mechanical knowledge but i am hoping its just the cam belt but as i sed i no nothing. also thers a sort of grinding sound when i change up thru the gears. i have it book in at olympic autos 2moro who will hopefully know what the problem is, but do u guys have any ideas before i go down in the morning so i can give them sum sort of idea wats up?
thanks

Sounds like its something to do with the box/clutch, it may be loose or summit. But it will be hard to say without seeing it, ye best waiting till ye take it to Olympic like before ye get any sense of worry mate.
Have you checked the basics? I have a rattling/knocking noise on my 306 that started today, thought it was the exhaust gone, but its actually the cat protector has corroded on one side and needs welding back on. So its just rattling. Im gonna put a piece of metal in it to place a bit tension in the gap until I get it welded, at least it will stop the rattle at least, lil bit of DIY never hurt anyone (although I am liable to get me fingers burnt if a dont time it right lol).
Sometimes silly things like this can cause allsorts of unhappy knocking noises lol.

Yeah, as advised, get it checked out could be a lot of things. For example the knocking on my motor could of been due to worn camshaft or the lifters. But hopefully it won't knock anymore as both of these have been replaced by new ones When was the last time an oil change or a service was done? A grinding when you go through the gears eh? Try using your clutch haha

As joe say's mate.
It could be oil not circulating correctly. Hence in the mornings louder.

haha I'm only joking matey
again, could be a number of things.
I think all, if not most fiestas work off hydraulic clutch, so it could be that.
Check the fluid in your clutch master cylinder (if it has one) if not, check your brake fluid as it may share the brake fluid reservoir with the clutch cylinder.
If the fluid seems okay, then you might want to have the system bled of air.
Any trapped air will cause the clutch to not disengage properly when you press the pedal.
Just wait to see what Olympic say about it.

Personally, unless you can see something obivous rattling at idle in the engine bay or under the car, I wouldnt bother looking into all these suggestions unless you know what you are doing.
All the theories are vapourware as none of us have seen the car or heard the knocking. It could, as stated, be one of a million things, and you could be looking for hours, without even having much idea what your actually looking for other then suggestions on here.
Im pretty sure if you know what to look for, you will have done as soon as you heard the knocking. And I would assume you have already had a check over things either way.
Its far easier to just go to Olympic and ask them what their opinion is.

I'm on about the clutch - Just suggested checking fluid levels under the bonnet - oil level and clutch/brake fluid. The most basic of vehicle maintenance checks

pete do you use 5-30 oil? do you push the car hard from cold? has the cambelt been changed as they tensioners give up at aroung 70k some to be as little as 45k. odes the knock ever go away? the noise of the gearbox may be a thrust bearing gone or the fact the slave cylinder is on it's way out.

I'm on about the clutch - Just suggested checking fluid levels under the bonnet - oil level and clutch/brake fluid. The most basic of vehicle maintenance checks But brake fluid and oil levels shoud be checked weekly anyway as part of a normal basic car maintenance schedule. Imho, its best to check break fluid every time you lift the bonnet, as it takes less then 30 seconds but can mean the difference between life and death. You would notice if your brake fluid was low from the amount of travel on the pedal, trust me. And if its checked weekly, like it should be, then it will be fine unless you have a leak, in which case, you will know for sure you are low on brake fluid. At the end of the day though, its shooting in the dark if the OP hasnt got a clue, the chances of it being the brake fluid (which I hope he has checked when he has opened the bonnet anyway) are probably 1 in 99, there has already been loads of suggestions posted here, and there are many more possibilities. Its not really something that is easily diagnosed without seeing the car/problem itself. Id just recommend get to Olympic and see what they say. As I say, looking round for the problem if you dont really understand what you are looking for can take hours and you still may have no idea. A garage/mechanic will hopefully be able to diagnose the problem without much hassle, and far quicker providing its not something thats blatently obvious.

If the noise increases with RPM its engine / box related - fluid levels dont even come in to it. If the grinding has started with the rattle, then chances are its box / clutch related. TBH the description, although accurate to the symptoms, is very hard to diagnose without seeing the car as there are so many factors involved. Could be a knacked gearbox, could be the clutch plate or the rattle could be unrelated from the gear problem. Take it to a garage and see what they say... (But given the info in the post Id gues that the car needs a new clutch )

Right, i am in no way questioning the honesty or integrity of the garage you have been to, I have no reason to. But as its a major job, make sure you get a second opinion on it, incase they are trying to pull a fast one. It is highly unlikely that they are, but its always best to get a second opinion when its something major.
