Entertainment giant Sony has apologised to the Church of England for using Manchester cathedral as a backdrop to one of its violent computer games.

Senior Anglicans demanded "Resistance: Fall of Man" was withdrawn from sale as a battle is shown inside the building.

In a statement, Sony said the company "sincerely apologised" for causing any offence, but added it believed it "had sought all necessary permissions".

The Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Rogers Govender, thanked Sony.

He said in a statement: "We acknowledge the admission by Sony that the building in the game is Manchester Cathedral.

I personally think it should be pulled and 100% of the profits should go directly to charities and organisations tackling gun crime and the causes in Manchester.

But of course money grabbing Sony won't do this, its all about profit before anything else, including common decency for Sony.

maybe matty they should give 'some' of the profits to charity or the church, who could then pass on the money as compo to the poor individuals that have been molested in the past by their so called men of god....

Yes its only a game but firstly, Sony never acquired permission to include the inside of the Cathedral in the game, which it should have done, and secondly its a bit insensitive to have scenes of shooting and violence in a building based upon a real-life church.

Its even more damming what Sony have done in light of the recent gun troubles in Manchester. But then, Sony dont give have any respect for or give a shit about anyone or anything other then profits.

In that case then, they should ban need for speed as it promotes irresponsible driving, and more people die from that than gun crime.

Yes, but there isnt a problem with speeding in general, it isnt something that is in the news. Sony shouldnt have expected anything other then the response they are getting from both the media and the church/relevant authorities at the monent, given the current situation in Manchester.

Also, I am not aware of Need For Speed infringing on copyright or causing trouble by featuring cars/people/buildings in games without acquiring permission from the appropriate organisations.

Having a good shoot up in a building based upon a real life church is completely insensitive and immoral at any time, nevermind at the moment, and even more damning against Sony is the fact they never asked the cathedral for its permission prior to launching the game - Sony know they wouldnt have got permission, thats why they didnt ask, because surprisingly as it may be for Sony, the church doesnt condone violence and/or guns.
