As CLJ said, get it serviced.

Could be one of many problems.

I think it could be on of these possibly:
Dodgy/nackered fuel pump
fuel lines leaking
blocked air inlet i.e. clogged filter
some sort of sensor failure possibly?

Most likey a fueling or air inlet problem, but I'm not certain.

The Lambda sensor is gradually on its way out and causing it to overfuel when idling and flood the engine from the sounds of things.

Just incase its a dirty injector or summit, get a 99p bottle of Redex from Halfords and put that through the system with a tenners worth of fuel. Even if it doesnt sort it out (i doubt it will), its worth a try and will only do good to the fuel system anyway.

Tell her to take it to a garage matey.

Were saying a service pomp so the basics are covered.
As service will sort that out.

Oil - Air - Fuel - Plugs - etc.

Okay the service may not solve it, but if it does
you have spent money on what needed doing any way.

It could be 1 of a million reason mate.
To speculate with out a service under its belt
will surely cost you more money smile

Id still say take it to a couple of garages to see what ideas they have prior to paying for a service. It could cost upto £100 for a service, and come out with the problem intact. Its especially bad if it doesnt actually need a service as yet.

Once a garage has had a look, they will be able to give it far more insight. As Pomp said the MOT is due soon, it would be best for her to take it in for a pre-MOT and get it checked over then. They can also advice whether any sort of service is needed at the moment.

More than likely, the problem wouldn't be uncovered or affect the results of an MOT.

Ask a garage to take a quick look when they're not busy (some will do it for free)

If a service is due, or the car has no service history, have a service done, prices and quality vary, but as Matty said, up to £100.

I think thats what Pomp was suggesting, to get them to have a look when she gets the MOT done. But imho, its much better taking a car for a pre-MOT anyway, the earlier ye can find out if it has any problems the better.

If ye take it to a garage, many will have a look for symptoms of problems etc for free and probably be able to give you much better idea's as to what it is.

Id swear it sounds like the Lambda sensor though, its the link between it mainly having the problem when idling, the car shuddering and the fact it getting worse over time (Lambda's arent detected straight away by the engine management light, and go gradually over a period of months usually), just sounds far too much alike the Lambda. But of course, there could be something shes forgotten to mention, or youve mis-understood Pomp.

Blocked / Dirty Air Filter = Same Symptoms.
Dirty Fuel Filter = Could be similar.

Both them would have prominent affects of the car when driving Mark, not mainly when idling. Also a clogged fuel filter would mean very little in the acceleration at all, something which she hasnt picked up on (as I say though, we could be missing some of the details/symptoms).

Lmao about the petrol, yer if shes only puttin £3 in a time its quite possibly that. Lol.

if it's injection mmaybe a maf sensor/idle contol valve.

carb model the airfilters cause a problem with the amount of induction pipe.

best bet if it ain't been serviced in a while is to change the plugs, oil change and airfilter and fuel filter.

whoa whoa whoa whoa people....i drive a micra M reg...the same thing happened to me...dont bother wastin money on servicin etc...i tried loads of garages and no-one found the problem... A box on the side of the throttlebody causes the problem. Im not sure if its the Lambda sensor as Matty says..but it sounds about right. if ya go to nissan theyll charge about 400 pound for a replacement part...ya can get a reserviced throttlebody from wirral spares in birkenhead for about 150 - 200...ebay has em quite cheap..cheapest method is to resolder the board on the side of the airbox yaself...but ya need a good guide to do it properly..and the problem may come back. MICRAS ARE FAMOUS FOR THIS PROBLEM....and its really irritatin...
