Poor Earth, if its to do with the rain is one possibility.
Check the earth straps on his battery at both ends.
It does sound electrical.

Check the tension on the altenator belt, and if needs be adjust it. If the battery is weak (on its way) and the belt is slipping when wet then this could cause it to not provide enough charge to the battery. The only problem with this idea, is it shouldnt therefore have enough charge to start up again. Also check the leads running from the battery for fraying, this happened on one lads car on the Pug306 forums and caused allsorts of problems.

battery is brand new, not sure about connections.
I read somewhere that these cars suffer from ignition problems. Also, it is mid engined, so quite difficult to get at

If you can get to the Earth Lead, a simple test would be to see if you can wiggle it?
If you can wiggle the lead its loose. As it should be held in tight tight. NO rust, rust does not pass electricity.
Also check where it does earth its self? What i'm getting at is if water is also getting to the fixing point, that could be part of the problem too.
When you say it cuts out when it rains, do you mean problems starting or driving along? Or is it okay once its running?
