on tuesday night a noticed that my speedo neddle was shaking when i got past 20mph and then went fine when i got upto 40mph, it was then fine yesterday and then ive just been out in it, was fine to start off with and then looked down to check my speed and it was showing 0mph when i was doing around 30mph, also the engine light was on, pulled over and turned it off and turned it back on and the speedo was still not working but the engine light didnt come back on for about 2 minutes, anyone no what it will be before i take it to a garage?

a simple guess would be the speedo cable as sometimes they could get loose and banjo.
i'd check the gearbox end as it may have vibrated loose

Speedo cable, free to fix.do it urself,u only need a spanner, some eyes, and whatever needed to get ur clockset out. Engine light may be related to speedo feed,or it may be another loose plug on back of clocks. If u want a guide on how to check speedo cable just reply

well, theres 2 eventualities. Its come undone at the gearbox or back of clock, and its snapped.
First one is free to fix, second one is cheap to replace from a scrappy.Altho ive encountered speedo probs on my last escort and that was fixed by pushing the plug hard into the back of the clocks as it wasnt "clicked" in

got the speedo cable replaced yesterday, got round the corner of the garage and it stopped working again, went straight back there and the guy said come back today first thing and he`ll sort it, dropped if off today and found that the problem was that the had been a tiny bit if cable stuck at the back of the dial so that the cable didnt click in properly and it had came out as i hit a bump, all sorted now so iam a happy man again,

Its not a bad price mate, not cheap but if you got a good job done then its a fair price.
It can cost £30 alone to have your managment lamp switched off so if they threw that in its a bargain.....

yeah, the two lads there are really helpfull, i would rather pay the bit extra and no that its been done properly, yeah they cleared the engine trouble codes on the ecu for free, my brother went there after he got his service there as he didnt think his corsa was running right and they hooked it upto the computer 4 times and never charged him

The gearbox sprocket sender thingy either has an electrical link through the cable to the speedo, or the dash throws the light up if the speed or revs are up and it's not reading any speed. I did this once, disconnected the cable +++from the gearbox+++, and got an engine management light up. When this is up it's in limp home mode (you may experience a judder now and then). The ECU is confused because one half is getting a speed signal and the other isn't. Check the cable at the gearbox end, it's screwed in. Be prepared to get very oily as well, it'll be filthy. If it's proper, it's the sprocket thingy in the gearbox. Unscrew one screw and retract it and put one from the scrappy in. They don't break ever, so don't worry about second hand ones. edit: sorry, didn't realise last bit.
