How to Jump Start your car.

There may be many reasons for your battery going flat ?
And the only way to get on the move again would be to
either Bump start your car or Jump Start your car.

This guide will cover “Jump Starting your car”
this is when you use a donor car / battery
to kick start yours into life.

You will need
  • Jump Leads
  • Charged Battery or a Second Running Car.

A Novice should be able to complete this nervously
but confidence will come as you do a few over the years.

Once your prepped this should only take 2 – 3 mins to get on your way.

What we are going to do is use the charge / power in the fresh battery
to fool the flat battery’s car that the battery is fine.
(Until we remove the Jump Leads).
And with the flat battery’s car running again work on getting
the battery back to a level where it will start the next time too.

This is a picture of a typical set of Jump Leads.
Red = Positive
Black = Negative

Important Only work with 1 lead at a time !!
DO NOT LET BLACK AND RED TOUCH ONCE CONNECTED TO A BATTERY

The following picture shows a typical car battery
which is located under the bonnet of your car.
If you look carefully you can see on the battery

+ Positive
- Negative

You don’t have to know what they do,
except that you are going to match + to + and – to -.

NEXT
Rev the Running Car higher than normal tick over or about 2,000 revs.
This will help protect the charge of the running car. (Stop that one going flat).

Now Turn the Key in your flat car.
It should sound like a fresh battery start or a little less.
If not wiggle the ends of the leads as these need to bite
into the terminals on the battery the grey looking things that stick up.

It Started
Excellent good work.
You could if you wish to leave both connected until the flat car warms up a bit.

Now we need to remove the leads.

BE VERY CAREFUL
Were saying be careful because we DO NOT want you to forget how
important and safety minded you must be at this point.
This is where people can get clumsy and accidents happen.

===========================================================
Important Only work with 1 lead at a time !!
DO NOT LET BLACK AND RED TOUCH ONCE CONNECTED TO A BATTERY

===========================================================

BLACK LEAD ONLY
1. Black remove from Flat battery – (are both cars still running? See below.)
2. Black remove from Running Car Battery –

RED LEAD ONLY.
1. Red lead remove from Flat battery + (are both cars still running? See below.)
2. Red lead remove from Running Car Battery +

Carefully pack up the leads and close your bonnets, if both cars are running.
Its advisable to maybe keep the flat battery car reving
a little higher than tick over to help it charge its self.
Give it 10 mins or so. Then go for a 10 min drive.

To have confidence in you battery again,
you will need to switch your car off for about 20 mins and leave it.
If it starts again after that time you can be fairly confident
that it will start the following morning.

If your flat battery car stops running,
try again, and leave the leads on a bit longer, 5 mins.
But no longer as this is more than enough time.

If after another 5 mins the flat battery car fails
to continue running it may be something that requires more investigation?

Failing to Hold a Charge.
Failing to be Charged by Alternator.

Hope this helps on those frozen mornings smile
