Monica - Check out the Rolling Road topic in Carz chitchat. My Escort is clainming 136BHP from the standard engine (2.0lt with a 1600 box - Tony hit the nail on the head, its torque that controls acceleration)
*** Bare in mind this figure will drop the more miles the engine does ie exh valves get carbon'd etc***

You also lose power through the transmission and drive train.
All car makers state power at the engine, but its very common to lose 25-30% of this through the transmission.
FWD tend to lose the least as it is a more direct drive (less parts to be moved), RWD loses a little more, and a 4x4........
What If There Were No Hypothetical Questions?

Anyway it all about torque!!
Greater torque=more power
Torque is the pulling force the car has. This is measured in ft/lb this is normally less than the Bhp figure.
